The SFT90 I’d say is still not as ‘good’ as the sbt90.2. Better tint, lower Vf, lower thermal resistance, and gets brighter. The only advantage is the price (although it’s a lot cheaper than 2 years ago) and that the 90.2 is being phased out.
Agreed, the SFT90 is really a “budget version” of the SBT90.2, not an upgrade. The 7070 footprint just can’t beat 10x11mm in heatsinking.
Interestingly, the test by koef3 shows the SFT90 with very slightly higher efficacy than SBT90.2 below 30W of drive power. So they must have improved the technology in some way.
These are both relatively ‘old school’ designs. Newer, more modern leds like thr XHP70.3, Xhp50.3, Nichian519A, and Cree XP-l2 are modern CSP flip chip design that are more efficient and can be driven harder. I think (someone please correct me) that’s because there are fewer physical bond wires, so at lower drive currents theres less resistance, so the LED works a little better even though the thermal resistance of the SFT is higher than the SBT. Above that and the SBT is better (it’s acrually better all around). Unless Luminus develops better phosphor layers and offers more tints, this isn’t a very compelling LED.
