Review: Astrolux EA04 12,600 lumens?

Banggood kindly provided the Astrolux EA04 for review.

It appears to be made by Mateminco. It managed to reach a little over 8,700 lumens at turn on. It fell short of the 12,600 lumens claim.

It has a simple ramping user interface. I kind of wish it had modes like Low, Medium, High, Turbo with sustained output so that the manufacturer can test each mode and provide runtime estimates.

There were no runtime estimates. I have performed a bunch of runtimes.

Here is my review:

I have the original Mateminco MT04, which was also marketed as the Astrolux EA04. These were originally equipped with Cree XHP50.2 emitters and reached +12K lumens. The new version appears to be using a crappy Chinese 4 core knock-off from the Jiangxi Latticebright Corporation, which explains the lack of lumens. At least they aren’t lying by calling them Cree emitters.

As an aside, I mixed what I thought were 8 XML2 emitters in series on a high bay light I built using an aluminum plate and heat sinks, then powered it at 3A with an external power supply. So each emitter received 3 amps. 3 of the emitters turned purple, dimmed and then failed within a month. Upon closer inspection, I discovered they were Latticebright XML knockoffs. I replaced them with Cree and now they are all running as expected. I have since inspected all my flashlight and found a few Latticebright emitters hiding in the mix, which I promptly yanked apart and replaced.

If they gave you that light in exchange for your review, Id consider reflowing different emitters of your choice onto the MCPCB (assuming it is made of copper with a direct thermal path). If you spent your own money, Id send it back for a refund with an explanation. I dont believe Im being harsh by saying its really pathetic how they ruined a great light to save a few dollars.

BTW, I love your reviews. Thanks for sharing!

Ah, that explains it! I had read a bit about the HP50’s not being CREE here on BLF but I hadn’t considered that Mateminco may have tested the flashlight originally with CREE XHP50.2 to come up with the 12,600 lumens claim.

Thank you!

Banggood provided it in exchange for a review. I need to mod this EA04 and the MT-911 (swap the driver).

What emitters will you be installing in it? XHP50.3 HI in it would be very interesting, probably more throw. Unless you meant just the driver swap, I think the MT04 driver should be a direct fit.

Maybe XHP50.2 HD or XHP50.3 HI. I haven’t got either handy.

Are there some nice tints for 50.3 HI?

1 Thank

Convoy has some 50.3HI in 5700k that ended up being quite nice, at least in the D4Sv2 optic. IIRC it is the closest to a neutral 3v 50.3HI available so far. Haven’t tried one in a reflector yet but it seems like it would be nice, the gaps between dies are tiny.

Another option could be the W5050SQ3 and turning into a floody thrower. It did 100kcd in my D4S but this might be even more intense.

You’re welcome. Im not sure of the emitter spacing, but you might be able to buy emitters already mounted to DTP MCPCB’s of the correct size. If you cant find what you’re looking for, a new thread asking the forum might help.

MT04 equivalent is EA01S, not EA04.

This is test result I got back in June.
Do take note that my 2021 EA01S XHP50.2 LEDs have clocked over 8hrs of usage. From my experience, an “aged” light tends to output lesser than fresh ones.

It’s a direct swap and also compatible with the EA01/EA01S drivers woth Anduril. They’re basically the exact same hosts.

Interesting. I reviewed the MT04 which was supposed to have the xhp50.2 HD and didn’t get 12k Lumens, but similar to this light so maybe I got one with the Xhp50B leds after all?

+1 on swapping the MT911 driver. I swapped it out for the EA01 driver with Anduril. It’s a direct swap. That light deserves a good driver to take advantage of the decent heatsinking.

I also have the Mateminco MT04. It’s my favorite 26800 light. Using the Vapcell 26800 6,200mah it measures between 24-25 amps on turbo.

Oh neat you can actually tell the difference? When I first saw this I assumed they had been using them the entire time lol. Good to know they were Cree at one point

Hello, newbie here. Instead of P42A, may you try Molicel P45B and get lumens result again?

Just very curious.

1 Thank

I don’t have P45B to test with.

Does the EA04 require button top? Flat top? I ordered one from Banggood, but I can’t find information about what type of battery is required. I know it accepts a lot of sizes batteries, but no word on the type of top.

Thank you.

The EA04 will work with button or flat top but it depends on the length of the cell.

I tried the following 21700 cells:

Cell Top Compatible? Comment
Molicel P42A 21700 4200mAh Flat Yes
Samsung 50S 21700 5000mAh Flat Yes
Acebeam IMR21700NP-500A 5000mAh Button No The cell is too long.
Weltool UB21-50 21700 5000mAh USB-C Button No The cell is too long.
