[Review] Convoy T7 - AA or 14500 battery, side switch, magnetic tail cap, high CRI LED & no BS UI!
I received mine a couple of weeks ago, 5700K.
What a gem of a light.
Not small for a 14500 light since the battery tube is rather thick, but for people with bigger hands like me it’s a wonderful “small” flashlight.
It’s not bad, just a shame it couldn’t accomodate more Type-C head sizes. And that port cover drove me nuts
It really needs hold for lowest mode and double click for turbo. Modern e-switch lights missing these basic features don’t make sense.
Had to simplify it to make it as friendly as possible. Click to turn it on, hold to change brightness levels. Perfect for everyone.
I have not seen a single person complain about the UI of a Sofirn/Wurkkos with hold to moonlight being confusing…
That might be a sampling bias. I’ve been around plenty of people that still only want one mode due to not wanting to fuss with extra modes and options. Given the choice, I suggest either a light with a rotary switch if it’s not too pricey, or a dual switch light, one for turning on and off the light, and the other for changing brightness.
The people who struggle with such a simple UI are usually either deep in the rabbit hole and buy rotary, or are complete newbies and buy 100000000lm Amazon lights.
Among convoys target audience I am pretty certain that the majority of users will be more annoyed by the lack of moonlight than buy the UI complication that a moonlight brings with it.
That may be so, but at the very least, these could make for better gifts than those 100K+ lumen lights. While you’re ordering emitters and drivers, might as well grab a few of these in various temps to give out to friends and family.
I like this T7. Received my a week ago with 519A 5000k. Running it with a Vapcell F15, it will also run on Lithium primary.
About 1/2 of my USB-C cables can fit, half won’t fit. The Apple USB-C cable 100% will fit. I need this light in a few more colors.
Not really. I have a D3AA with Anduril 2 too, but it’s more of a show-off light to my friends with the fancy color led & short burst of sunlight. Sometimes I just want a light with a simple UI & the convenience of a built-in USB-C. I travel with a power-bank for my phone and I use it charge up this little light. Don’t even need to carry a charger along.
I’m on the fence as to whether or not I want to pot the electronics, or at least paint most of the wiring and connections with some type of dense non-conductive polymer…it would still allow flashing with the pin tool, but it would also stand up to bumps and drops much better too. I do also kind of want to coat the tailcap and bezel in a similar material, like Rhino skin…it’ll be the toughest little anduril driven light EVER.
Also, it already has square cut threads, HUGE plus.
This.
I’ve been wondering for some time whether Moonlight (let’s say 1 lumen) would even be technically possible with these drivers.
In general, double-click for Turbo and hold down should be a quasi-standard for Moonlight. Direct access to Moonlight is essential for lamps with mode memory if you don’t want to blind yourself in the dark because some bright level has just been saved.
Any light that I’m going to EDC has to have a moonlight mode. I can live without it for lights that are mainly used outdoors.
For me, it depends on the activity. For lamps that are only used for pure activities (geocaching, urbexing etc.) where no low light is ever needed, I agree with you. Moonlight is all the more important for camping.
In any case, I don’t get why Convoy lights still don’t have real moonlight. The 0.1 % setting in the 12-group is way too bright. In the past I was able to flash custom firmware on the oldschool 105c drivers to get a usable moonlight mode, but nowadays Convoy uses (apart from a few drivers with ATTiny) obscure “Sonix” MCUs which are not easily flashable, not to mention the firmware, which would probably have to be reprogrammed for this.
Everything apart from throwers is barely usable without moonlight for me.
Convoy clickys without moonlight are somewhat okay as they always start at the lowest level, but even there I wish I could go lower.
I won’t use most SOFIRN or Wurkkos lights because of the confusing UI.
I wasn’t thinking about camping, whoops! You’re right you definitely want moonlight for that.
I don’t know why Convoy can’t do it either, my Reylight has a clicky interface and that has proper moonlight mode.
I have T7 with 519A 5000k.
I like it but when I measure current compsumtion with power supply I measured that output on 14500 is not stabilized, it works in fet driver style and output is ralated to voltage.
On 4.2 volts it pulls about 3 amps which is much more than 1.5 amps in description.
I better like buck/boost drivers in T3 or T6.
Thanks for the insight. Are you able to measure the PWM frequency (with OPPLE maybe)?
