Review: Jetbeam RRT-21 XM-L 18650 / CR123x2 (magnetic control ring)

Jetbeam RRT21 XM-L

  • Art and design!
  • This is a gorgeous light! Just can`t stop playing with it.
(Please click on the pictures for a larger version)
take your time to look at the pictures, they look better in larger format

My first impression was very positive.. this thing doesnt look only good, it also feels good.

What drew my attention to this light was mainly the magnetic control ring this one uses...Mostly because I love my Sunwayman mcs lights.

What you get:

  • RRT-21 XM-L flashlight
  • Clip
  • Brown cardboard box
  • 2 Spare O-rings
  • 1 Spare Rubber boot
  • 1 Lanyard
  • Manual (English) warranty card? (Chinese) and proof of authenticity (Chinese)

This is pretty standard set of accesories.. Nothing really outstanding.. but still adequate..better than the Spark SF5 I reviewed earlier, which was lacking a lanyard, or even spare O-rings.

Here a picture of the complete set:

Close up and handling

Jetbeam has really put some effort in shaping this beauty. I doesn`t have any sharp edges.
Nor is there any blemish in its anodizing.
After handling quite a few lights, both in budget and above, I can really say this is the most beautiful machined light I have ever owned... Yes, even compared to all my Sunwaymans, this one is "king of the hill".
Sunwayman definitely is coming second, but really close.
It also is better than the Fenix lights I owne(d), Nitecore and Eagletec.

but its way above any ultrafire/trustfire/uranusfire/crapfire/housonfire light I have ever seen..
Of course, that shouldn`t be a surprise considering its price tag.

The RRT21 is really smooth machined, and can be classified as a real shelf queen :D
But that silk as smooth RRT21 has a downside as well... it`s grip.
There is not much knurling on this light.... almost none. Except for the control ring.
Fortunately the belt clip helps in keeping some grip on this one.

Lens and Reflector

The lens is coated, and hardened according to the manual.
This picture was taken after unscrewing the bezel.

The RRT21 has an Orange Peel reflector, with an XM-L cree emitter.

The bezel can be unscrewed with the Xeno Tw02 diffuser, it fits perfectly.
But unfortunately the diffuser doesnt fit over the head to use it as a diffuser.

Threads
Threads came lubed.
Threads on both ends of the tube are anodized, and therefore a Lock out is possible... although it`s unneccessary in this case. Simply because it has a tail cap switch.
They are not square though.

Tail-stand-able?
Yes, but not very stable

Engraving on this light is also really good. No blurry letters, and in high quality format.

Dimensions and weight:

  • Length: 140mm
  • Dia hd: 34mm
  • Weight: 137grams

UI:

Fully Variable!
From about 3 to 450 lumens!
Having used some Sunwayman lights with Magnetic Control Rings, I just wanted to know what other brands have to offer with this feature.

How it works?

Standby position

The positive thing about the standby mode is that you can handle the light from Off to Strobe or minimum or High without changing the position of your hands on the light itself.

The control ring rests in a Standby position...
When you move the control ring clock-wise, you first feel a little bump, when you will start of in the lowest mode (about 3 lumens)
and you will slowly go up to its brightest setting, the ring just stops at this point.
And visa versa, when you turn the ring Counter-Clock-Wise from this point, the output will decrease until its about 3 lumens, before you enter it`s standby mode again.

The big downside of the Standby position is its high current draw....
I measured about 0.2A in the Standby position.. that`s really high.
Therefore I advise to use the tail-cap switch to turn the light off.

Sunwayman lights start off at a much lower output than the RRT21, and that`s a little shame for the RRT21.
In this jetbeam RRT21 review you see that it powers on from 3-5 lumens, which could be a little too bright in some situations..
And it rapidly increases output,
in contrast to Sunwayman lights, which have a smoother transition from Low and High.
But you can still get a little lower output after turning it on, by turning it very slowly Counter Clock Wise, which will get it at a slightly lower output.
Sunwayman V11R on the contrary has no blinky modes, so if you want a light with blinkies this might be your choice!

The control ring turns 140 degrees from Low to High.
This is the measured output in % when turning the control ring.
At 15degrees the light turned on..
The graph shows a diagonal line between 10-15, but there is none in reality.. It`s the way the graph software works.

you can see that it increases pretty fast from about 0-30% by just turning it 20 degrees.
Unfortunately this isn`t 100% the way it increases, because the light slightly turned sometimes during the test..

SOS/Strobe?

Yes, both!
When you are in the Standby position,
you can enter the Strobe mode by turning the ring Counter Clock Wise..

SOS mode:
In the Standby position, turn the ring back and forth 3 times from low to high within 1 second, and you will enter the SOS mode.

You can also adjust the output of the SOS mode, by slowly turning the ring towards low...That is a very nice feature if you ever want to use SOS.

PWM:

I couldn`t detect any!

Performance:

I`ve tested its performance with a NCR18650B after a full charge.

In the Highest output mode it started off at 1.3Amps... Definitely not a barn burner!
but you will get some Run-time in return.

Runtime test:
The following graph has been taken in a time span of a mere 3 hours.

This light is not current regulated..and it will decrease output over time..
This will help running the light longer.
You won`t notice the difference much when using, because it happens gradually.

Mouse over for graph with Lumen numbers.

at 3 hours, it still had an output at around 20%=100 lumens

I turned it off at about 10% output, at which the battery was down to 2.8V
I had a little break between 40 and 60 minutes, so I didnt write down the actualy output in lux numbers, so I kept the output the same from 20 to30 and 40 minutes.. But when I cam back at 60 minutes, the output was quite a bit lower.

Urban Beam shots:

i took a few urban beamshots to compare it against the XinTd X3 with 3AA eneloops, the DQG 26650 3x XPG2 with 26650, and Sunwayman D40A 4xAA eneloop PRO.

Fujifilm EXR200R M-mode f3.3 0.5Sec ISO400

1. control shot..

2. Jetbeam RRT21 in Highest output...about 10 seconds after turn on

3. XinTd X3 XML2 T6 4C on highest setting (mouse over for comparison RRT21)

4. D.Q.G. 3x XPG2 NW High mode; supposedly around 500 lumens (Mouse over RRT21)

5. D.Q.G. 3x XPG2 NW Turbo mode (mouse over RRT21)

6. Sunwayman D40A in Turbo, supposedly around 900lumens (Mouse over RRT21)

Compared against the same lights, but now in the Lowest modes, but took out the XinTd and added a Fenix LD12.

RRT21, D.Q.G, SWM D40A, Fenix LD12

The lowest mode I could get it in.. with a full battery. I suppose it can be lowered when the battery is less full.

  • can be used with 2x CR123 and 1x 18650
  • Beautiful
  • Magnetic control ring
  • Long run-time (up to 3 hours)

Is this the same model?

I thought that the successor is the RRT-2 model?

Thanks for the great review!!

No, the RRT21 is the successor of the RRT2

Very nice review and superb photos! Way to go, Marco

Wow very intuitive UI. Shame about such high parasitic drain. I like this light but $80 hmm…. on the “maybe” list

And here’s the new version:

Jetbeam RRT26

I didnt even know that the RRT26 existed!

Now I would really like to check that new RRT26 or the Nitecore SRT7 out..
I like magnetic control rings ;)

And probably the Sunwayman V20C (not the V25C) in neutral white as well.

Does anyone know where the RRT26 can be bought?

(I saw some on Ebay, but over $100. Im only interested if its less than half of that)

I had been waiting for this light to show up in the mail. Needless to say I was very excited about it’s arrival. I was in class and my wife called to let me know that a package had come in for me. My students then enjoyed watching me bribing my wife to bring the light down to me. Cost me take out and a back rub, totally worth it in case you were wondering. I could not wait so I opened the light during class and then promptly fell in love. The anodizing is spotless, the action is smooth and the feel of it is just amazing. Hands down the nicest light I own.

I promised you!!!

It's definitely the nicest light I've owned!! In one word: beautiful.

Very late to the party, but I’m in. Somehow I missed this earlier, only discovered it because of a special offering in my email. How could I pass up the RRT21 at $36 delivered? So now I wait for this “perfection” to be delivered……

Can you share the details or was this a targeted offer?
