I'm not sure I'd go for an ROP in it. Unless you want some incan loveliness. ROP bulbs are almost impossible to find and very expensive to get shipped here. Given that it's a 3D a 9AA adapter (or three 32600s), a KIU socket and a WA1185 bulb might be a better bet. Myself, I'd go for a good heatsink and a DD XM-L - or stuff in a 3A driver if you want to. Run it on 3 D NiMH for more light than an ROP and a lot more runtime. Get a warm enough XM-L and it'll even be incan coloured.
That said, everyone ought to have an ROP at least once in their lives. It is a very easy mod. Best to use an older Mag (One that uses a 5/64" setscrew in the switch) as the newer switches don't like 4.5A up them. And fail.
A pair of 32600s and a D cell dummy, a metal reflector and a glass lens (I can put one in the post with the L2r if you want one). Don't know if KD still have the huge stock of Mag mod parts they used to. If they do, you can get all the bits you'll want there.
Awww... c'mon...! That beautiful host is jonesin' for a triple XM-L neutral!! I will attest to Justin's work-it's incredible and the black shorty won't be the last light/host I get from him.
i read all the other stuff. the bottom line is Old-Lumens is a very rare and very talented MASTER at what he does. period. nothing else really needs to be said.
Just a little comment on the ROPs in my collection. The ROP HI lamps I have owned all vented some kind of gas when they warm up. I am not the only one to report this too, others have as well. The cure is to heat it up and let that stuff out-gas so it does not pollute the lens or reflector. I tried this by running the light without the bezel. Jut let it run "candle mode" for ~20-25 minutes as I was advised by other CPFers. Did that with my 26650 build, but it generated so much heat that it melted the solder, and severed the connection inside the PR lamp. That happened twice with two different ROP-H PR lamps.
I still have an ROP-H, but I only use it for short burst ON cycles. I dont want it to out-gas and stain the reflector, and I don't want to melt the solder yet again.
The thing is; I've wanted an ROP for a long time but I didn't know the bulbs were hard to get. I'm also considering a Malkoff XP-G. They're $39 right now but honestly, a true flashaholic has gotta have an ROP.
I have 11 Mags but this is the only one to win a spot on Foy's lower shelf.
