ROVYVON AURORA A2
Hi, today I am reviewing a near perfect keychain light (spoilers). It is the Rovyvon A2, and it is pretty darn awesome. If you’re interested in this light i have an amazon link to it at the end of the review. I really appreciate the support, so thank you all for your time!
In the box:
The light comes in a very small box, but includes; The light, a pocket clip, sticker, the instructions, and a biaggie with some spare parts in it. The bag includes an extra charging port cover, a small split ring and a larger beefy split ring. It also comes with a one waypocket clip which is nice, but i won’t be using the clip, so it’s not that important to me. The pocket clip is reversible so you can carry the light lens-up or down if wanted.
Basic overview & specs:
The raw stainless steel Rovyvon A2 retails for around $40 USD, but other material versions will be a bit more. It is available in a couple different colors, but the one that I got was raw stainless. Along with the colors, there are 2 different options for emitters. On their website they are labeled as “high output” and “high CRI” options. The high output option is a cool white Luminous SST-20 emitter, while the high CRI version uses a Nichia 219C emitter for a lower output but more pleasant color temperature. The one I was sent has the SST-20 in it, and it is not bad, although I would definitely recommend the Nichia one if you’re a tint snob like me. With the SST-20 emitter, they claim an output of 650 lumens, though less with the nichia option. The SST-20 is very similar to my other SST-20 lights, pretty good CRI, but a noticeable greenish tint to it. The LED and TIR optic are protected by a glass lens and shrouded by the body so that it is difficult to accidentally damage them. Moving back is the side switch, I will go through the interface later in the review, but the switch is perfect in my opinion. It is the perfect size, and it is clicky. The switch is also shrouded by the body to prevent accidental activations, which is a nice touch. The switch itself is milled from the same stainless steel that the rest of the light is made from, so it doesn’t look out of place. Next to the switch is a little light that is used to indicate charging status as well as when the light has low battery. Towards the back of the light is the charging port. This light features an internal 300 mAh battery that can be charged via USB-C. I’ve tested this on a couple of different cables, and it seems to charge just fine, which is rare nowadays as most of my USB-C lights are picky with cables. Unfortunately no cable is included with the light. Like stated before the light comes with an extra charging port cover, so if it is damaged, the user can switch it out for a new one to keep the IPX6 water resistance rating. My light is raw stainless, so I can’t vouch for their coating with the colored lights. No matter what coating you have, it will scuff and scratch if you have it on a keychain, but I think that the stainless version will do good to hide them a bit better. As for the weight of the light I was pleasantly surprised, as it is pretty hefty. It comes in at 34 grams which isn’t a lot, but it feels substantial in the hand which makes it nicer to use in my opinion. At the back of the light is the lanyard hole, which is actually pretty big. It was super easy to fit parachord through it and make a lanyard, unlike my lumintop edc01 which tool a lot of finagling to get right. The back of the lanyard hole is flat, so the light will tailstand if needed. The lanyard hole can be filled in with the included magnet so that you can stick the light onto a surface, which is nice, but you don’t need to put it in if that doesn’t interest you. The pocket clip is alright, I’m not a huge fan of 2 way clips, but it actually makes a lot of sense on a light like this. The clip has the right amount of retention, and is easy to take out of the pocket. Putting it in the pocket is a bit tricky for me as I have big fingers and this is quite a small light, but like I said before I’m not going to be using the clip.
Versions:
Rovyvon has a couple different versions of this light. Along with different colors and emitters, there are other material options as well. Like stated, the A2 is made from stainless steel, but materials like Copper, titanium, bronze and more can be found for an upcharge.
Interface:
off—>hold—->momentary high (650lm)
off—>Double click—>continuous on—>hold—->off
on—>click—>cycle modes (moon->low->med->high)
off/on—>triple click—>strobe—>click—>off
Moonlight mode=0.5 lumen
Low mode= 25 lumen
medium= 200 lumen
high= 650 lumen
It should be noted that in continuous on, the light will automatically come on in its previously memorized mode. To memorize a mode, turn to the mode you want and wait 3 minutes, then the mode is memorized. Out of the box, the light comes with high as the memorized mode.
OPINIONS:
THE GOOD:
- Great build quality
- Nice switch
- Large lanyard hole
- Nice milling on the switch (no imperfections)
- Nice interface
- Hefty (its got a little weight to it)
- SUPER bright (650 lumens)
- Small size
- Onboard charging
- Comes with some accessories
- Nice chambferrred corners, so not hotspots
- Beam pattern is good (large hotspot with some flood) similar to other TIR optics
- Good price for the quality
THE BAD
- No USB-C cable is included
- A lot of branding on the light itself
- Mode memorization process is weird (wait 3 mins)
Final opinion & purchase recommendations:
As you can see from the opinions section, I don’t have many negative things to say about this light, which is odd as i usually nit pick the crap out of all of my lights. Honestly, this light is awesome, everything on the light seems like it was thought through. My biggest complaint is the branding on the light, like seriously there’s a lot. Other than that, I can get over the lack of an included cable. The size to output ratio is crazy, and it blew my mind how bright it was for being such a small light. It is for sure replacing my previously carried lumintop EDC01.
As for a recommendation, I definitely recommend it 100%. Rovyvon have something for everyone in the sense that there are different color, emitter, and material options, you can get a light that you don’t have to make any compromises on. If you are interested in purchasing the stainless steel version of the light, I have a link to it: [Aurora A2]
Here is a picture of the light, the lanyard and bead are not included with the light.
Disclaimer: Rovyvon have sent me this light for review, but i have done my very best to remain unbiased and honest in the review. Thank you for your time.
