The Sanrenmu 939 is a large folding knife with aluminium scales and a framelock. It is available in black and silver, but silver is hard to source since the 9 series got discontinued by Sanrenmu.
Build quality:
The overall build quality of this knife is very good. It has no blade play at all and the black finish is very nicely done. Mine has some very small nicks at the back of the knife. It looks like the anodisation didn't get perfect at these spots. Unfortunately I didn't manage to take a picture of them. But they are very small and hardly visible. The blade folds and unfolds very smooth right from the beginning. I did not have to break it in.
The blade:
The blade lenght is around 94mm with a cutting edge of 81mm and a thickness of 3mm at the thickest spot. It has a black coating with a Sanrenmu logo, the model number and the used steel laser edged into it. The blade is made of 8Cr13MoV stell and came very sharp. It cuts paper really easy. I am very impressed by the sharpness of this knife.
Clip and thumbstud:
The clip is right hand tip down carry only. It's shape fits the overall design. The knife sits a bit high in the pocket, but not as high as the Enlan EL-01. The thumbstud has enough grip to open the knife without problems. I could not unscrew it by hand, but I think it is possible to do so.
Handling:
The knife has an overall lenght of 200mm and the handle is 106mm long. A downside could be the grip of this knife. The aluminium is rather slick. The only grip is provided the the clip and by the grooves at the back of the knife.
Conclusion:
The Sanrenmu 939 is a very nice knife with only a few downsides. I would definitely recommend it.
It can be sourced at exduct.com They currently sell it for $8.58 at their Special Limited Products Page. Make sure to use the discount code "BLFgiveaway" to save 5%.
I bought 10 of these in black and 10 in silver (they are now permanently out of production, so buy them while you can). I use a 939 in food preparation while camping and it makes quick work of vegetables and meat. Others see me using it and want to do the food prep for me - just to use my 939. I cant blame them... it performs as well as it looks. Sanrenmu delivers a great line of high quality budget knives that are probably the best available in their price ranges. Has anyone ever heard of a "bad" Sanrenmu?... probably not.
The Enlan EL-01 has remained my preferred EDC for over a year, but it isnt nearly as well suited for culinary work.
Its only 3am here in the state of Maine. Lol. I actually found a new in box on ebay so I was checking Google for it… Paid over double what it used to sell for.
It’s a well regarded knife but although I own loads of SanRenMu knives I don’t have one of these. It was actually one of the few that I fancied buying when I first got into knives as I loved the drilled holes in the scales but I somehow never got round to it. As I recall, they were always about $20 when I first saw them.
When I saw your post I quickly checked the link in the OP because I was thinking “$8.58?..… I’ll have a few of those……” - then I realised it was a lifetime ago sadly.
As for “only 3am” - that is usually when I’m up with the baby!!
It’s often an 8.30-9.00pm bedtime for me and the Mrs.
Yeah… I wish we could still buy them for that price. I paid $23. I still think I stole it for that. Good luck with the baby… My baby making days are over… I hope lol. Take care of yourself and yours.
