Review: Small Sun ZY-T08 2 x 18650 (Parallel)

No doubt. LOL! The only checking these Chinese sellers will do is check that the light is for sure in the box that they throw in the package that is being sent to you. And by that I don’t think they even open up the box the light comes in rather than they are actually smart enough and so well trained that they actually know the difference between a box that doesn’t have a flashlight in it vs one that does. Now that takes some brains and some good feel when you actually pick up that flashlight box for the first time. These workers are probably so underpaid that they really don’t care much of doing what they are told.

How do your lights transfer heat as stock?

I think mine does it veeeery poorly
Had it running for a while on table. PCB quite warm ad so on but body totally cold. Could use a bit of that paste…
Pill has a lot of thread play.

I looked at this thread for the first time this morning. Having read the initial review and the first few replies I was getting pretty interested.

Now, some time and 5 pages of follow-ups later I have decided that I really can't be bothered.

I know this is a Budget Light forum but sheesh! Seriously? Cardboard, bits of paperclip, ill-fitted "hammered-in" screws, wildly varying current readings, possible "turbo" modes that come and go at random, drunken monkeys, a possible second batch, plastic that may actually be aluminum depending on how you tied your shoelaces this morning... Sorry I'm out.

Everyone loves a bargain and it seems a few people got lucky with early iterations of this light. I also understand that for those of you who have already bought one, this thread will continue to provide useful discussion and tips on how to get your money's worth. But for a few dollars more it seems I could get the HD2010 with vasty better QC and similar output.

This Small Sun = large headache.

Life's too short. Have fun guys.

I was thinking the same thing, then I went for a walk with my step son and had a play with the light……nah, its worth it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Plus, I have picked up a variable resistor today, assuming its the right range, I should be able to dial in 3.5 - 4a and really wake the sucker up……

Besides, current hd2010’s don’t seem to be without their issues, that’s what stopped me ordering one and ordering this “no issue” thrower instead….

Man! That reads like a good novel.

Thanks for the heads-up gords. I'll certainly do a bit more research first.

Mate, when you go through the entire thread in one sitting it reads like something out of Mad magazine.

I have no doubt that T08's popularity is its downfall. It suffered from high demand that triggered volume production, thus starting batch with quantity over quality "mode".

If you're willing to go the extra step for a serial-batteries light, ZY-T13 is a very good light for $24. No problems heard so far. Very good constant power regulation driver, aluminium reflector (62mm, same size as T08), throws very well stock at ~1A@8.4V but can be resistor-modified for more power. NO plastics (except centering ring, but you want it that way). Mine can do 500m throw after dedome and resistor mod, haven't even tried for further throw but I believe it will do more.

My HD2010 died before I could really even use it! Really disappointed! My ZY-T08 has been awesome. I love it! Very little risk of burning it up like the HD2010.

And my new HD2010, as said elsewhere, is not without its problems. Can’t wait to try this one.

But can it be shortened to accommodate 1 x 18650 or 2 x rcr123s?

I ordered mine from DX. Sept 6 ’12

Aluminum reflector, 2 retarded monkey tailscrews, and $5 says my driver is held in with paperclips and chewing gum.

If you have a lathe anything is possible. A single celled T13 would be hot!

My thoughts exactly.

But since I don’t have a lathe the best I could do was order this:

Big reflector single 18650 (MXDL clone or something).

It has only been a few days, so I have some waiting to do.

Skyray AO clone. I have it. No mode memory! Great output, and decent throw. Just not HD2010 or above level(s).

Mine is from DX , shipped 9/19: aluminum reflector, driver press fit & tight.

Plastic from manafont.

Thanks Rusty Joe for the identification. Thankfully i’m not expecting a throw champ from this light, just a pleasing throwy beam, what i have hypothesized to be similar to the T13’s in a less bulky form factor.

NP. I’m getting rid of mine simply because of the lack of mode memory, but also because sometimes on high I can hear the driver whine. And I thought I’d love the ergonomics of it, but I don’t. You may dig it, but I just couldn’t get into mine. But as far as light output—all I can say is, try running it off an unprotected 2600 mAh 18650 from KD (the pink ones) and enjoy the output!

Did you see this topic? : https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/8294

Only a little modification on the driver, and this little light becomes a beast.

One of my A0 clone puts out 900otf lumen ( really !) and more than 45000cd, and the other with a dedomed xm-l 85000cd. Impressive numbers.
