This light was provided to me by Wuben.
I like it! I like it more than I thought I would like it.
This 3-in-1 EDC light packs quite a punch. Wuben refers to this light as ECL - Easy Carry Light. And, they’re not wrong. It nearly disappears in a pocket.
The shape of it seems like it would be difficult to hold. It’s not. It fits very comfortably in my hand. The button is easily accessible. And for such a small light, it’s got a lot going on.
First, the primary LED’s.
They’re 2xSST-36F. They have a nice, neutral, 5000k tint at 100%. Below that, the lower you go, the more green it gets. But, even at the lowest, it’s still tolerable (and I’m kind of a tint snob). There are 3 settings for the primary LED’s; Low, Medium, High. There is no moonlight. And low is still bright enough that it hurts to look into it. My Opple read these LED’s at only 70 CRI. Trading CRI for lumens, this little guy cranks out 1300 lumens. It’s a very floody light. It has no problem lighting up my entire yard.
Second, the side COB lights.
Four taps (not full clicks) of the button will switch to the side COB lghts. There are 3 lights, total. My Opple reads them as 4000k and around 80 CRI. They have 3 modes; low, high and beacon flash. The E8 comes with amber panels that can fit over the lights. However, there are also red panels, white panels and blue panels that can purchased separately. The panels are held on by magnets and easily pop off the sides. However, I’ve not had even one problem of them accidentally coming off. They sit flush with the sides of the light and have a small indention near the middle for removing them.
Third, the UV light.
Four more taps switches you to the UV light. This is a single emitter on the front of the light, next to the primary LED’s. It utilizes the same reflector as the primaries. It’s a 2 watt, 365nm UV LED. The reflector helps focus the beam a little, and really seems to help quite a bit. I don’t think it’s powerful enough to go scorpion hunting with. But, it’ll definitely help around the house.
Fourth, the body.
As previously stated, this light is very comfortable in my hand. The one provided to me is aluminum. However, a titanium model is available, as well. The body is a sort-of triangle shape, with the sharp corners cut off. It’s essentially a 6 sided light. But, some sides are smaller than the others, so it maintains more of that triangle shape. It’s powered by a USB-C 14500 that accessible by unscrewing the button mechanism. The button is firm. But, could be slightly more firm. It’s very easy to click it off when trying to switch modes. The button also has NPC threads as there is an optional fidget spinner that can be purchased separately. I had considered this, then saw the price and changed my mind. The light will not tail stand. And, there is no magnet in the tail. Personally, I don’t need it to tail stand. But, the magnet would be helpful. The bezel is held in by 3 screws that are not glued. Making this light very easy to modify the front LED’s if you desire.
Likes:
The overall design
The multiple light sources
The size and weight
The optional colored panels for the side lights
The optional fidget spinner
Dislikes:
The button needs a firmer spring
No high CRI LED’s
No magnet in tail
Cost of the fidget spinner
Overall:
It’s a nice and uniquely shaped light with a lot of options packed in. The E8 currently retails for $59.99. Is it worth that? Yes and no. Yes because of the unique design, and the available options. No, because I would really prefer a 90+ CRI light, somewhere. If you’re like me and have the ability to mod a light with some better LED’s. Then, yes, it’s very much worth the cost.
