Hey folks just wondering if some one could tell me the difference between Round bar and machine rod? From the specs i can see they are both T6. I want to make heat sinks and i thought this would be better than using flat bar. Machine rod seem to be more expensive when compared to round bar why?
I usually buy T5 flat bar. Last i bought was 30 by 30mm.
I was reading that T5 is better for dissipation compared to T6?
Carpel are apparently the manufacturer but they dont sell in smaller amounts. Flat bar that is T5 rated 5.85m, 40mm in width and 6mm in thickness is like $32.
I was thinking about buying this also but its almost 6 meters long. Heaps cheaper than Bunnings!
Round bar is just extruded (just like tooth paste coming out of tube), so there may be some (really minor) fluctuations in diameter. Machined rod, as the name states, is machined, so tolerances are tighter. The machined rod is therefore more expensive.
T6 and T5 are heat treatments, so it says nothing about what (aluminium) alloy you have.
The aluminium bar from the link is probably low alloyed aluminium, as nothing is mentioned about chemical composition. So strength is very low. But if you want to make a heat sink that should not be a problem. Low alloyed aluminium has generally slightly better thermal conductivity than higher grade alloys.
Thanks mate!
Yea i know about the hardening and chemical processes just wasn’t sure on the different between the two stocks but it makes sense. 6061 is the composition and T means that the aluminum is tempered and the 6 is the hardness rating.
Where as 6061-0 is pre-tempered.
Most lights are T6 aluminum as its called aircraft grade lol. Apparently T5 is better for heat sinks its better at dissipating heat.
The 6 is not a hardness rating. The heat treatment number refers to the heat treatment procedures, resulting in different mechanical properties. I’m also skeptical about T5 resulting in better heat dissipation; I could not find (easily) mechanical properties of 6061-T5 either.
Other than that, how’s everything going Chris? I just ordered a couple of hours ago two Skilhunt H03 lights in neutral white. I was waiting a long time for a rechargeable version, but was quite disappointed with Skilhunt’s latest offering. It’s got a magnetic charging system that requires a dedicated cable which I don’t like. So I finally got the “original” H03 (it’s almost a classic here isn’t it?).
Anyway, I also checked out your video review of the light, and it’s nice to be talking to you again. :sunglasses:
I have no eye deer if its a good price or not. I do know there is a big variation in price between sellers. I’ve been using this mob lately. They have a scrap bin they sell of cuts from where I am and cut to size of the shelf.
Ah cool they have a shop at Caringbah i was eyeing them out also. Like 15km from my house its closer than aluminum warehouse at Brookvale they are literally the other side of Sydney. I will go past and see what they have in stock.
Thanks!
