I recently got lucky and was paying attention when Kaidomain briefly has the SFT40 3000K in stock So I decided to jump on the bandwagon and ordered a few on 16mm boards to play with.
My first victim is one of my SC31 Pro’s. The first “modern” light that I picked up a few months back after all of my trusty Streamlight Strion’s had failed again and I was finally sick of sending them back for repair. The original emitter was a 6500K SST40, while super bright compared to what I was used to was not better in quality of light. Having since picked up a SC31 Pro in 5000K along with a SP40A with a LH351D in 5000K and a SP40 with a LH351D in 4000K the 6500K had to go.
As far as mods go this was about as easy as it gets. The bezel was not glued and came off with out any struggle. Just un-solder the wires, pull the board, clean up the old heat-sink compound, re-tin the wire and new board, apply new heat-sink compound, put the new board back in and re solder.
I am quite pleased with the end results. It has a smaller slightly throwier hot spot that the 5000K one. It is definitely less output but its not noticeable enough to matter for me. It is much more pleasant light compared to what it started as. I will probably put some DC-fix back on as I like a more smooth transition from hotspot to spill.
SC31 Pro 3000K SFT40 on Level 65 versus SC31 Pro 5000K SST40 on level 65
Now I need to decide what to do with the other SFT40 3000K that I have.
