I am very well aware of how insane the SFY55 LED is, but I still want to use it.
The build is not supposed to be practical, but rather just for fun.
The goal is a tiny extremely power-dense light. Basically an MS03 with 30k lumens instead of 13k.
Optics are an afterthought with this. It’s almost certainly becoming a mule to save a few mm of length.
I don’t plan on running the LED for longer than 5s at 100A.
Requirements for the Host
- As small as possible (40 mm OD max)
- 1s1p 21700
- 32 mm MCPCB support (thick shelf to store / conduct the heat)
- 28+ mm driver support (I might be able to get the driver down to 26 mm)
Optional but nice to have
- USB-C Port
- E-switch in the upper end (will have to mod otherwise as mechanical would melt at 100A)
Copper would be the best material because of thermals; it has a lower specific heat capacity than aluminum by weight but a higher one by volume, which I care more about. The better thermal conductivity of copper would, of course, also help. But due to the higher cost of copper flashlights and the reduced options available, I don’t think I can expect this to exist commercially.
I considering designing my own body and letting it be machined, but I would like to avoid the steep price associated with this.
The driver is currently still very flexible and not set in stone
I am going to use the new tabless cells. Not exactly sure which is the best option. Because of that, I am going to test a few different cells and see which one works best. Current contenders are
Tenpower 50XG
Tenpower 40XG
Ampace JP40
Reliance RS50
The driver is 2 * 7135 + 2 Fets (TPHR6503PL)
The reason there is no MCU is not because of practicality. It’s just because I wanted to have a project without an MCU and because I don’t like having to cycle through a million settings to get to where I want to be.
The driver uses an 8-layer PCB with 1 ounce of copper on all layers. The reason for this is just that this is the cheapest way to get loads of copper on JLCPCB. The light being waterproof is not necessary in the slightest; this project is already dumb enough.
