Show us your beam shots - XHP70, XHP50, MT-G2 - for comparison

Ok, so we have members doing builds for the new four die leds, the XHP70 and XHP50. How do they compare to MT-G2?

Let's see some good comparison beam shots and the elusive white wall captures.

We need to see how these leds stack up as far as beam profiles.

Tell us what reflectors or optics you are using and what you did to get a good beam, if you got one without the MT-G2 dark spots or the four die X of death.

How about it?

Edit:

I have the XHP70 6V stars now and the leds should arrive next week. Hopefully, I will have a light ready within two weeks from today (02/06/15). It will be a multilpe XHP70 light, so who knows how that will look.

I will be doing a couple of LED "2D" Maglite mods, one with MT-G2 and one with XHP70, both at 9120mA. That will be some time in March, but no other single led mods coming soon. The rest are multiples.

I tried to get pictures of what I'd call a shadow in the center of the hot spot but failed miserably so I'll try and explain them.

The 35mm reflector from Cutter with the XHP70 led has a large shadow in the center of the hot spot which I could not tune out. Overall it had a large hot spot, large shadow in the middle with a large flood of light around the hot spot.

The DST was the first light I tried with the XHP70 and it took along time to tune the reflector to get the smallest shadow in the middle without losing the intense hot spot. I've lost a little on the light meter out the front but come to a reasonable compromise. Compared to the smaller reflector I'm not complaining about the shadow. Keep in mind its not perfect.

I tried lots of different reflectors by holding them against the XPH70 led in the DST from P60, C8. the reflector used in Maglites and HD2010 and was not really happy with any of them though this was a pretty rough way of doing things.

A picture of the Cutter reflector.

Left to right. The Cutter reflector was fitted into a much modified F13 XHP70 2.7A, HD2010 MTG-2 2.7A, DST MTG2 3.7A and DST XHP70 3.7A. All currents at the led.

Thanks for these useful comparisons! So those last two are direct comparisons of the XHP70 and MTG2 ? Nice! The XHP70 seems brighter and the throw looks about the same, right?

Looking at the leaves just vertical of the road and the trees on the left i’d say the XHP70 as at least twice the cd of the MTG2.

subscribed. very impressive.

Damn, throw and lumens both seem improved on the XHP70 over the MTG2.

Mouseover of the last two photos that MRsDNF put up.

MT-G2 mouse OUT and XHP70 mouse OVER

Thank you Steve, for putting up photos for us. Hopefully others will post some when their builds are done. The more we get to see of them, the more we can learn. It's a no brainer that, at the same amperage, in the same reflector, a XHP70 should be brighter than a MT-G2. It does, after all, put out more lumens than the MT-G2. My concern is the black cross in the hot spot, which, for the most part, you will only see on a white wall test, but not see as much in the field, where the beam is already broken up with shadows, from the subject matter.

so if i were to build a light with a xhp 70, could i use the same driver as a 6 volt mt-g2? namely the zener mod 22 mm fet from mountain electronics?

Yes.

i wonder what it would be like in my Z1… i wish i had a source for just the brass pill out of the z1. i would build a few different set ups for it.

As OL said, yup, and you can also use a Zener mod driver for the xhp 50 on XM mcpcb’s for a tighter beam or where you want to use a reflector/optic with a smaller opening. Good thread, I have 50 on the way I can compare to an mtg in the same Fastech 35mm reflector.

subbed and will update soon.

It would be horrible, throw would be not good (for the amount of power) and there would be dark lines in the projected image cause of the multi-die emitter.

i know it would be like that, but what about partially zoomed? and i know exactly what you mean about the lines

Part 2 with a lot of help from an army of willing assistants of which a couple deserve an honorable mention. Lucy and Jack. I just wish they could use Photoshop quicker and more adeptly than I can.

Applause for the two main assistants as they really pushed me to my limit like I was a dog.

All pictures with mouse overs will have the MTG-2 mouse out with the XHP70 as the mouse over.

Firstly will be zoomed out and secondly zoomed in. The zoomed out and zoomed in appear to be of a different brightness . I can only assume its because they are a new picture and not a crop of the original. Almost forgot. The white bucket is the 150M mark.

F13 XML2 dedomed over 3 amps at the led.

F13 Cutter 35mm reflector XHP70 3 amps.

DST MTG and XHP at 3.7 amps.

HD2010 MTG-2 2.7 amps.

TN35 and Monster Light.

Zoomed in pictures at the same distance.

F13 Cutter 35mm reflector XHP70 3 amps.

DST MTG and XHP at 3.7 amps.

HD2010 MTG-2 at 2.7 amps.

TN35 and Monster Light.

Now for some long shots though I would not call either of the DST throwers. Keep in mind the shed is reflective and at a distance of 520 meters.

TN35 and Monster Light. for some reason I have lost the pictures. Sorry.

And finally my favorite light the C83.

The DST MTG-2 lives 99% of its life as a lantern so a comparison was deemed necessary. Both lights have a 1/4 unc thread in the tailcap for this purpose. When the pictures were taken the same cup was used on both lights.

Low.

Medium.

High.

To sum up. The F13 XHP looks useless. In all honesty it does have a shadow in the center of the beam which can be annoying. Would I recommend this reflector, no but at the end of the weekend it was the most used light away from camp. It lights everything up within 75 yards with a wall of a really nice tint light. What did surprise me is how much the light heated up on medium as this is what is was mostly used on.

The DST also has a very slight shadow but this is not noticeable as a rule unless your white walling which I try and not do. If anyone can pick the shadow in these pictures they are doing a better job than I. No comments please.

I have plans to downgrade the 9 amp driver in the Monster light sometime to a 6.6 amp Taskled. Maybe I will just try the XPH70 in this light? Did I mention I love the tint?

And what could be better than my other favorite light that no one owns lighting up the sky after a night taking pictures in the bush. Lets hope its batteries dont run out soon.

I was actually most impressed when used in lantern form. That’s waaay cool how it jus ligjts up your entire campsite. Even low is impressive. What cups are you using?
Have you found any creamish color cups for a more neutral tint?

I did mean to take a picture using a blue cup but forgot. Must of been the full moon. The tint from the plastic cup is ok. They have been in this bush place for over 21 years and it occurred to me one day that they may make a good diffuser. They haven't been drunk from since. These also work well with the TN35. Not what the manufacturer had in mind when they designed it one would assume. It beats having the sound of the generator in the back ground using these as a light source and music is supplied via the car.

Great pics and comparisons MRsDNF. Has that TN35 been modded ?

Very clever use of the lamp base and a ood argument for side switches.
