I’ve seen it reference multiple times to put silicone lube/grease on the threads of your lights. I’ve seen links to this online, would something like this from the local Home Depot be fine to use?
That silicone grease looks fine. Mtn and fasttech also have it for very cheap. Most people don’t use vaseline because it can swell some types of orings, the same way lithium grease can.
Be careful using vaseline, being petroleum based it can easily destroy o-rings and seals. It’s fine to use as long as you’re ensured your o-rings can handle it.
That grease from HD is also fine, I use a brand called Super Lube for threads and stuff, you can get a whole tube for about $6 from harbor freight or amazon instead of one little dollop for $3.50
Used to use vaserlin as that’s what maglight used to recommend years back, before I knew any better, as others said it will swell some o rings, also found it made some plastics soft and breaks them down over time
Vaseline works for Maglites, or for lights that do not use the cheap silicone O rings. If the O rings are nitrile or butyl rubber, then vaseline works.
Best to just use the silicone grease found almost anywhere that has a plumbing section. It works on all of them, including the junky silicone ones found on lights like the SRK and others.
Super Lube is the brand (and it’s not a HF brand), they have a bunch of products but their “Synthetic grease with PTFE” is the only thing HFT carries. I’ve found a few of their products at restaurant supplies locally including a synthetic oil that is FDA food safe “for direct food contact”, I use that on all my knives for both lube and rust inhibition, overall I’ve been pretty satisfied with all the ones I’ve tried. I use the HF grease on about everything around the house (not on cars tho or on anything that calls for lithium grease or needing to be food safe) and everything flashlight related.
I have a small tub of trident silicon grease for dive equipment, camera housing o-rings, etc. stuff lasts forever since it takes so little. For regulators and such it needs to be food grade since you will be inhaling air flowing past it but there are other types sold that aren’t so you have to watch where you use which.
