Simple UI AA/14500 light recommendations

Hi all, I’m seeking recommendations for AA/14500 lights for my aging parents. Whilst there are so many lights in this category, most have complex interfaces, which is the last thing I want to get for them.

Key criteria:-

  • Simple UI - ideal would be on/off, high/med/low selection, and no mode memory
  • Good tactile switch (i.e. something with a physical click, something that’s easy to use if their agility deteriorates)
  • Relatively compact format - no large head diameters
  • Neutral to warm colour temperature - would like to avoid cool/greenish light
  • Reasonable beam spread; neutral to flood, not after an ultra long distance spotlight here

Nice to haves:-

  • Onboard USB charging
  • Non-UI charge indicator

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for stopping by, CDD!

Convoy T7
Don’t pick the black one as it is the first version which doesn’t fit bulky USB connectors.
I think it does have mode memory but apart from that this flashlight ticks all your boxes. The default optics is 60 degrees which is very floody, but you can leave a comment to your order asking for different TIR lens. Or just buy spare TIRs and test them for yourself. I recommend 20 or 30 degree beaded variants.

First thought is the Convoy T7. It’s meant to be a simple four mode light with mode memory, and the choice of emitters are high CRI. You can select whichever color temp you’d like. I have a preference between 3000-4000K. Go for one of the ones in a color other than black, as the black ones, if they happen to be older stock, have a smaller charging port.

Skilhunt EC150

It has just about every feature you wanted:

  • UI - same as Olight: click to turn on/off. Double-click for turbo. Long click for moonlight. Hold while on to ramp up. It does have mode memory for intermediate modes.
  • Switch - it’s an e-switch, but has a good tactile feel with firm click.
  • Emitter - Nichia 519a. Neutral white and high-CRI with good R9.
  • Beam spread - As a compact triple emitter light, the EC150 is very good for short range. Exactly what you are looking for.
  • Onboard USB-C charging: Yes. Charging port is on the bottom of the head.
  • Non-UI charge indicator: Yes, though fairly rudimentary. When light is turned on, the switch will light up with blue LED. When below 3v it will start flashing.

I don’t have a T7 but I have a T3 and it’s become my go to light. It fits nicely in my hand or pocket, has great battery life and output, it’s well made and it’s easy to use - no overlycomplicated UI that interferes with your ability to use the light. I bought a bunch of these as Christmas gifts and the reactions ranged from thinking they were incredibly cool to “oh, how nice”.

Another suggestion would be the Ozark Trails light from Wally world. It doesn’t meet all your criteria but it meets a lot of them. It’s got a simple on off switch in the base and puts out more light than you’d think. It’s probably still under $2 with the 3 AAA batteries after the tariffs, it will probably cost more than that to drive there and back. I gave one to my aged mom who hasn’t said much about it and probably won’t try it until the batteries in the light she’s using now give out.

Skilhunt EC150
advantage: floody beam
disadvantage: no LED warmer than 5000K

Skilhunt M150
advantage: 3000K or 4000K LED option (suggest 4000K)
disadvantage: not floody, there is a hotspot plus spill

note the Skilhunt UI does have last mode memory for the 3 middle outputs, imo not a bad thing.. it will come on where it was turned off, with a single clic

and Hold from On cycles the 3 primary modes.. KISS..

inexpensive option, no charging

Convoy T5

advantage: floody beam, wide choice of LEDs (suggest 519a 4000K)
disadvantage: no charging, mode memory

Mode memory can be disabled.

I’d vote for T3/T5. The 12 group driver gives lots of mode set options. E.g. if you don’t want the user to run down the battery too fast on 100%, use one of the mode groups that limits max to 50%. Worried about too many modes confusing the user? - a couple mode groups have just two modes.

What about an OG version of the TS10 if any are still around?

Get a 14500 with its own onboard usb port for charging, though.

Set the aux lights to that twitchy blink so it can be found easily in the dark, and the tail switch has a nice click but you don’t need 2 hands to push it down.

Doesn’t andy2 (3?) have a retard mode that does away with the “click yourself into confusion” modes, and is even more limited than even simple mode?

Failing that, “manual memory” can be set to always start at a predetermined value. Then you can ramp up/down if needed, else just set and forget and treat it like a 1-mode light..

Or if you can get your hands on one, get a Xeno. The ES1 is AA only and slimmer, while the E03 is a beast, nigh indestructible, and even has finger grips like on a bike’s handlebars for the ultimate no-slip, and is AA/14500 dual-fuel.

Forgot about the ES1, but the E03 always starts in M, with the cycle being MLH.

Or the Pokomon AA is nice, too. The 1AA is nice, and the 2AA comes with the double-length Li cell with onboard charging or can use 2 AAs in a pinch. Nigh forever runtime. Always starts in L.

Too lazy to go get it to look, but I got an old 2AA Sofirn or Wurkkos that I use to burn down moribund AAs. Mode memory, so simple click on/off in whatever mode I got it, easier to hold than any 1AA light.

The danger of 1AA lights with onboard charging is that you KNOW someone’s gonna try to charge an alkaleak. And that’s why they’re (thankfully) rare.

Oh, should point out that even the most nauseating fried-egg pencil-beam can be turned into a nice buttery smooth gentle flood beam with a bit of diffusion film.

Should’ve mentioned that most of the small lights I got are so equipped. Anything other than dedicated throwers, pretty much the first thing I do is slap on some DF.

Notable exception being the TS10, which has a nigh perfect beam right out of the tin.

My LuxPro lights that all use those hateful little XP-G3s behind deep reflectors and have the worst out-of-the-box beams, were wonderfully tamed by some DF on the front glass.

I stick the DF behind the glass whenever possible, but you can stick it on the front if you want to be able to peel it off for whatever reason.

good point

OP asked for floody, hence T5..

and the tailswitch suits OP’s request for a positive clicky

all good points :+1:

I gave Acebeam Pokelit to my mother and she doesn’t find any difficulties in using it.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies guys! I’ll work through the suggestions and let you know what I decide.
