Packaging


The packaging is compact. Various selling points of the flashlight are printed on the front and back. It is somewhat confusing that Skilhunt, the manufacturer, is only mentioned on the side, while the brand name “ESKTE” is prominently displayed instead, while the light itself can be bought under Skilhunt branding on their own website.

Technical specifications (luminous flux, brightness) are not listed on the packaging. Only the version number and LED type is shown on a sticker on the side.

The light itself is visible through a window in the packaging.


The package includes various accessories: a USB charging cable with a magnetic connector, several adapters for different cell lengths, a clip, a lanyard, and an instruction manual in English and Chinese and other languages as well. There are some small typos in German translation.

Design



The flashlight is finished entirely in black. There are cooling fins on the head. The battery tube features striped knurling. On the back, at the level of the switch, are the contacts for the magnetic charging port. The bezel is slightly serrated, so that a lit flashlight can be easily identified even when placed on its head.
The battery tube has relatively thin walls, which is noticeable for the feeling. The advantage here, however, is the reduced weight. In my opinion, though, a wall thickness 0.5 mm thicker would have made sense here.

This is a general issue with this flashlight. It heats up very quickly; prolonged use of the turbo mode is only possible in very cold environments. There is a temperature control that kicks in and keeps the surface temperature below 65 °C. However, the temperature can rise above this threshold as soon as the turbo mode is reactivated immediately after being turned down.

It features an OP (orange peel) reflector. It is textured to give a smoother and wider beam. This reflector includes a small cutout for the brightness sensor, which reduces the light output if the light is too close to a surface.

The front lens has a blue AR-coating.

Without the clip attached, the flashlight rolls away easily, which could be annoying sometimes. To avoid that, the clip must be used. However, thanks to the flat tail cap, tailstand is no problem at all.


There is only one side switch used. It is completely black, and a status LED is visible in the center of the switch button. This LED shows status information such as the battery level or lockout status.

Thanks to its classic design, the button is very easy to operate, even with large hands. The button can be operated very easily with the thumb. The button is slightly recessed, which reduces the risk of accidental activation. Operating the button while wearing gloves may be difficult, depending on the thickness and design of the gloves.

Battery and charging



A 5000 mAh 21700 battery with Skilhunt branding is included. It is equipped with a protection circuit, which makes it safer to use even without experience in handling Li-ion cells.

In the discharge test (1 A in the Vapcell S4+ v2.0), 5102 mAh could be discharged from the battery.

The battery can be easily removed by opening the tail cap. If one of the included adapters is used, it may also fall out.


The battery is charged with 5.2 V/1.6 A and 8.6 W.

The magnetic connector uses two colors to indicate the charging status - red for charging, blue for fully charged. It does not support PD or other protocols; charging is done exclusively at 5 V (standard USB voltage).

The M300 v4 can be used with full functionality while charging. The highest brightness levels are available, but the charging is speed is much slower or there is no charging at all. Thanks to the magnetic connection, there are no flaps or covers that could cause leaks.

It does not have a power bank function, but it is not possible to connect USB devices to it anyway.

UI


The UI is simple and basically resembles Anduril 2, though it lacks the settings options.

  • 3C from on/off: Blinkies (Strobe, beacon, SOS)
  • 1H from on (Blinkies): change mode
  • 4C or more: lockout, mode momentary (moonlight), unlock with 4C or more
  • 2C in lockout: disable/enable locator LED in switch
  • hold min. 5 sec. from OFF: disable/enable light sensor function

Although the Moonlight is relatively dim, its slightly wide beam could still cause self-glare in very dark environments and when the eyes have adjusted to the darkness. For most use-cases the brightness of the moonlight mode should be fine, though.

The brightness sensor, which is designed to protect surfaces from excessive heat, works for the most part. Rain does not affect the sensor. However, the sensor only works on lighter surfaces; on dark gray or black surfaces, it no longer works or functions only very unreliably. This feature can, however, be disabled (see above).

LED and spectra data


One emitters are installed in the M300 v4. These have a CRI of 95 (R9 of 80), sometimes called “9580”.
This LED is an original design by Skilhunt. It is not known which manufacturer produced this LED on Skilhunt’s behalf. HSXLED (“Hopthink”) is sometimes mentioned, although this cannot be confirmed. In terms of basic design, this LED is similar to other LEDs attributed to this manufacturer, such as the NTG50.
The bezel can be easily unscrewed, allowing easy access to the LED and making replacement easy.




The spectrum is produced by a mixture of several types of phosphors. The phosphors used are likely LuAG:Ce³⁺, YAG:Ce³⁺, Ca-a-SiAlON, and CASN. The red phosphor used here saturates on highest mode (turbo), which gives a cooler CCT. A classic 450 nm blue pump (exact: 449 nm) is used. The cyan hole is relatively minor and give a higher Ra than other high CRI emitters.

With a color temperature of 5490 K, a Ra of 94, and an R9 of 84, the light quality is excellent. The DUV is just below 0, which makes the light very neutral. On lower modes, the Ra is even higher, with up to 98.

Measurements


There is no PWM. There is only a faint hissing sound (coil whine?) when the momentary light is used in lockout mode. This is not noticeable in the other brightness levels.

Note: Despite careful execution and verification of the measurement, I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the following measurements.

The manufacturer’s specifications are met. After 5 seconds (shortly after turning it on), performance actually exceeds these specifications by 5-10%. Very good!

Beamshots


The Beam is a good all-rounder, though it tends to focus more on throw due to the domeless LED and the relatively small LES. Nevertheless, the light works well at close range. There are only very minimal color shifts in the corona, which - if noticeable at all - are only visible on a white wall. Outdoors, this is no longer an issue.



Conclusion


The M300 v4 is a solid all-around flashlight that generally does little wrong. The light quality is excellent thanks to the high CRI LED, it’s easy to use, and the beam is flawless. The UI is easy to understand and is reduced to the necessary features, which is good for everyday use.

However, it uses magnetic charging contacts. While this offers advantages in terms of durability and water resistance, you must always carry the corresponding charging cable with you. Additionally, the wall thickness is relatively thin, and the light heats up quickly, but only on highest modes.

All in all, it’s a solid flashlight that’s also very appealing for everyday use by non-enthusiasts and rarely disappoints.

I wonder if some USB-C 21700 might be short enough to fit?

This could bypass the need to rely on the proprietary magnetic charging cable.

The BL-250 that it lists as an option is listed as 76mm long.

That Keeppower you linked in 76.8mm but Acebeam and Fenix seem to be closer to 76 even.

With button top the included 21700 is 75 mm long. Since there is some room with the springs I think 76 or even 77 mm shouldn’t be a problem. The bigger issue is likely the current the light draws.
