SkyRC MC5000 Battery Charger and Analyzer Review

What “global store” is that. Sorry for being slow…

I see it from “WLToys” global store for what seems to be $141. Still pricey…

I see. checking out with taxes it is $194. I wonder if it will go down now that there is a tariff agreement for the next 90 days.

Also. I found it for the same price at the SkyRC Global Store. https://shorturl.at/fxUsM

Yes sky’s global store and that tariff price is with the new 90 day adjusted price, so tariff + they added my states local taxes bring it to a little over $200, too much for a 4 port charger

I think MSRP is AU$197 but some retailers are selling it for AU$170 as a new release sale.

1 Thank

So that would only be $65.00 USD, I only wish

So how does Australia get it for less than half of what they charge America for it? And then they tac on the tariff

What prices are you seeing?

$166.49 + tariff + local sales tax as of this post

The biggest issue I have with the MC 5000 is the click-roll-click operation of the scroll wheel, which significantly compromises usability.

Replacing it with four discrete buttons would offer a more intuitive interface, enable a larger screen, and provide better symmetry with the device’s chassis.
I also wish the battery compartment were extended to 90 mm to support 26800 cells, enhancing compatibility.

Additionally, including a memory mode similar to that of the MC3000 would allow users to store and recall custom charging profiles, improving overall functionality.

I can fit QB26800 cells but it’s not officially supported.

I added the MC5000 next to an Xtar VP4+. Two different worlds, two different use cases I guess.

Almost charged all my AA and AAA eneloop Pro batteries (with MC5000) when the weather turned today. At home it became 30 Celsius, and so the batteries got hotter as well. I measured a few while almost fully charged (using Refresh mode, C-DC-C) around 50C. The fans sometimes kicked in, but only shortly. I read somewhere that 55C should be considered the maximum so I added a small fan.
Not surprisingly the temperatures dropped, only around 40C at max.
But also something else changed, suddenly the charged mAh changed as well. It was roughly 2550 on average for the AA cells, but now it went from 2860 and in one case 2966. Is that just “inflation” and not real, same as for Break-In numbers?
For these higher charges the MC5000 also reported lower Delta mV for a few of them down to 2mv and 3mV. It was set at default 6mV.
The settings were 1A for discharge and 1,5A for charging.

Is it ok to cool down the batteries with a fan while charging while it is hot in the room?

Isn’t 1.5 amps a little high for charging double a batteries I don’t even charge my lithiums at 1.5

1C says it could be done at 2,5A I think. In my Xtar I sometimes used 2A when in a hurry.
The default profile for eneloop Pro AAA AA states 1,25A.
So 1,5A should be ok. Noob here :-).

It’s recommended to charge NIMHs at 0.5-1C.

SkyRC released a Thermologger Duo product that can be used with the MC5000 and many other chargers:

It just records the temperature and sends it via Bluetooth to the phone, right? Or can it be connected directly to the MC5000?

in fact, this little “Thermologger Duo” has been in their portfolio for some years now, originally intended for the use in RC models to monitor temperatures with a range of -20 to 210 °C …

new is the idea to compensate the absence of temperature sensors in the slots of the MC5000 with such a device …

usually it is attached mechanically to an RC model with a fastener …

it has a port for two temperature sensing cables, which can be cut to the needed length … the insulation of the ends then is stripped and the sensors can be attached at the desired places with gluing copper foil …

the two temperatures are transmitted wirelessly …

so to monitor 4 slots of the MC5000 the user would need two of these Thermologger Duo … (of course “sold separately” …)

they integrate into the SkyCharger App, so that the temperatures of the individual slots could be seen on the smartphone …

at the moment there is no hint from SkyRC where best to attach the ends of the temperature sensing cables at the MC5000 … theoretically they could also be attached directly to the batteries …

all in all it seems like a later makeshift solution for the decision not to equip the MC5000 with individual temperature sensors in the slots like the MC3000 has them, despite the fact that the MC5000 can charge with up to 4 x 5A, whereas the MC3000 is capable of “just” 4 x 3A …

instead of temperature sensors there are openings in the slots from below in order to steer airflow from the fans inside the charger to the batteries …

The SkyCharger app needs to be used to bind the Thermologger with the MC5000 indirectly.

1 Thank

Well, I hope this is helpful to someone, Including the OP:
Google translate says:

Dear. Thank you. I am interested in the accuracy of measuring the capacity of batteries. Can I trust the MC5000 in this parameter? I have huge doubts. Even in tests, you can see that the MC5000 greatly overestimates the indicators. How are you? What can be done for accuracy?

I’ve added a few photos showing a partial teardown to the review.
