I don't know if I'm going to do this one. I'm still mulling it over. I wanted to hear what y'all thought about the pros and cons. I know them, most likely, but that has wow factor that's almost irresistible.
That glass is a lens out of a Solitaire. I have it there, because if those 3 Nichia leds fit on that lens, they will fit on a star of the same size. Looks like I got room to spare.
Of course, making the star is going to be a B****, but what I really think is that someone like PilotPTK, or someone with the access to the proper equipment, could make those 3ups for the Solitaire. I probably will try, but it would cause a lot of cursing and sore eyes, trying to see those little led pads.
Just an idea... They would have to be parallel and use a 10440 and there's no real room for a driver, so it would be a wow light only.
Waddya think about something like this?
EDIT:
After several hours, I can report that this is one of those projects, that are better left to someone who wants to design and manufacture a run of mcpcbs.
I actually got the base of the star made (a copper round). I actually got copper strips cut and flattened (1.5mm wide, yeeessh!). I actually got the center pads mounted on copper strips, but the rest of it is a wash. Believe me when I say these dammed things are TINY!
It's just too small for me to make (at home). A mcpcb could be made, but as it has been said, WHY?
Yes it would be a novelty, a one off, but it would be better to use an XM-L. Most likely one would get more out of a single Nichia, than trying to power 3 of them together.
It is just way too small for me to do with the tools at hand and the hands that I have, LOL. "If I were 30 years old again", but then I wouldn't be trying crazy stuff like this. I would know better.
Anyhow, thanks for helping to push me on to at least try it. It was an experience in minutiae.
