Sofirn C01R deep red [sold out, discontinued]

Fully charged Eneloop AAA BK-4MCCE min 750 mAh.

~4.5 hours on Medium with a LADDA AAA.

Received C01R

modes on my meter are
0.5 lumens
10 lumens
42 lumens

Im very happy

Received one today, also very happy.

Ordered 30th Aug from China, delivered Melbourne 10th Sept.

Ordered hair pomade from Sydney 31st Aug, still no sign of it!

I added some dc-fix film #1 from Boaz to one of my C01R’s. The diffuser from Sofirn seems to work better with dc-fix film. It’s no longer super bright at the tip of the diffuser tube.

Nice mod TimMc! :+1:
I will try this with some diffusor films on mine as well.

It makes the beam more practical for walking around a dark room at night because it spills out more.

Honeycomb optics would be awesome.

any chance these are coming back? totally missed this

I did request to be added to the interest list for the Sofirn SP10R, but I prefer the size of the C01

Don‘t worry, C01R will be produced again but with SST20-DR instead of XP-E2 photo red. Chances are good that the beam will be looking even better and maybe the output will be slightly increased.

Please don’t use glue on the threads for the head. It’s much easier to swap the optics, emitter, or add dc-fix without glue. I find that tightening it by hand is sufficient.

The first C01R I received didn’t appear to use glue. The second C01R and two C01S have been glued. Now I’m trying to melt the glue and attempt my first emitter swap (SST20 2700K).:stuck_out_tongue:

Its amazing to me how bright 42 lumens is. How do you think the red wavelength affects your meter readings?

I bought 8 C01Rs, 2 for me and the rest for gifting. With the beam being unusable in my judgement i had to find an easy way to modify the optic. 4 of the heads unscrewed with finger power only and 4 wouldn’t unscrew but the ones i could unscrew all required slightly different amounts of power with one being very loose indeed so i won’t know if the other 4 are glued or just tight until i tools on them.

On the left is a C01R with an optic that i sanded with 80 grit paper (all i had access to, crude but does the job though i’d recommend finer paper if you go down this route), it was the first one i did and while it is muuuch better than the default optic and perfectly usable i find it to be a little too diffuse. I’ll keep this one for me.
In the middle is a more lightly sanded optic, still with 80 grit but i tested the beam pattern regularly until i reached the amount of diffusion i wanted, the hotspot is brighter than the heavily sanded one but there’s still a nice transition and enough spill for context. I’ve already gifted this one and will do the others like this one.
On the right is an unmolested C01R.

Left C01R vs Lumintop EDC01 with 3500K sst-20, both on medium mode:

At some point i want to try swapping the EDC01/unmodified C01R optics to see what the beams are like.

I use Panasonic NiMHs and bought some 500mAh Ikea Laddas for the gifting, lower capacity but cheap and should handle more recharges/abuse. Unfortunately the Ladda pictured below gets stuck in the C01R battery tube!
So i had to gift one with the Panasonic instead.
As you can see from the second picture there’s not much difference at all (i’m away from my tools atm so couldn’t measure the diameters):

All in all though i LOVE this little light!

good observation

there are several factors in play
1st, technically, the reading on my meter, when measuring Red, should be increased by 62%. I did not do that, as it adds complexity that I did not want to discuss too soon. Now that you bring it up, consider 42 lumens of red is roughtly equivalent to 68 lumens of white. That accounts for your correct observation that red looks brighter than the lumens straight off my meter calibrated for white light.

Another factor is the size of the head. My meter underestimates the output of small sofirn AAA…

these variables are part of the complexity, that a deeper study of Red light will encompass.
These two lights have almost the same output, on my meter… both are on maximum…

(again bear in mind my meter underestimates the small lights, but in this case, both are the same size… for example, the C01S is actually supposed to be making 100 lumens on an intergrating tube)… I think the red does look brighter than the C01S, despite what the meter reading would suggest.

Since I am experimenting with Red Light Therapy on my eyes, for me the important thing is to not use Red that is more than 40% the brightness of noonday sun. I believe staying below 20 lumens of red on my meter, unadjusted for spectrum differences, is similar to the level used in the vision study. So I use medium on my C01R.

Marc E great photos and info, thanks

great option, thanks for sharing info and photos

I do think a pebbled optic, with a nice diffused beam, would be a nice option… depends what we use the light for. Certainly the focused red beam works very well for seeing across a room, while the diffused beam is more suited for close use, at arms length.

choices vary by application…

me too!
Instant cult classic here :+1:

and I like the stock beam too… because the hotspot is wider than on my Tool/Maratac aaa reflector lights

Will there be another preorder discount, Lux?

I will do my best asking Barry for a nice BLF discount to preorder C01R (with SST20-DR). Not sure though if we can expect a bargain price of $ 7.99 plus shipping again. I hope Sofirn will also be able to supply a microlensed/pebbled optic suitable for C01R. Awaiting news from Barry anytime soon.

Not sure if I speak for anyone but myself, but I’d love to have two (or more) optic choices than a discount on an already well priced light.

Imagine if Sofirn offered a combo accessory pack of 2-3 additional optics for a reasonable price. Of course these optics could possibly fit every C01S/R/??? including the hopefully upcoming E21A version, so it would be quite versatile and not limited to the R. Emisar does this with one alternative optic you can add to the D4V2 upon purchase and Convoy has a 5 pack of different optics you can buy for the S2+.

Wouldn’t that kind of accessory pack completely set the C01S apart from the competition? Don’t get me wrong, even ONE extra pebble optic along with the flashlight would be wonderful.

How much would be nice an Headlamp Red version or 2000k E21A
with programmable moon mode
like E02H

I thought I had ordered one also, but when I received it today,I saw that it is the C01S with a white led in it.Of course, the aluminium was painted red… :person_facepalming:
I don’t understand who’s the fault is,so,I keep it for a keychain light, waiting the new red led light with the SST led.

Where did you order from Theodore41? Sofirn does offer the C01S in red anodization, too.

However, everyone with a C01R should also have a C01S and vice versa. :-))

By the end of september I hope Barry or I will be able to post a new update on C01R using SST20-DR. Stay tuned...

I ordered from a shop in Aliexpress. The name is Beamax lighting store.
