【Sofirn】Design a headlamp together & Giveaway

Please Ni-Mh format support (not L shape) smaller as possible.
Dual Led channnel with variable CCT by smooth ramp.
12mm Tir lens easy to swap (hold by retainer rings), ultra sublumen, no pwm

Ideally, a CW and a high CRI version, as some tasks need more output, for example things where you need to see some distance, and high CRI is better for close in tasks or detail oriented work.

18350 tube is a good idea. One thing that would be unique that I don’t think anyone else has done yet in a headlamp is a 21700 headlamp with can also use an 18350 tube, by making the short tube narrower than the head or tailcap.

Looks like the winners were posted on June 17th but no one noticed until today.
Although initially I was not interested in this giveaway, I am very glad to be chosen.
Also, congrats to the other winners!

I received the Sofirn HS42 on Monday.
Although I like the headlight, I greatly prefer my Sofirn HS20.
No offense to Sofirn, but after I received the headlight, they asked me to do a short review.
A lot of manufacturers and retailers do that, and my answer is usually “no” because I don’t like to be asked to do anything after I “win” something.
If I liked the HS42 more than the HS20, maybe I’d do a review of some sort because I prefer to review my favorite lights.
(That’s why I’m so picky about what I choose to review.)
Anyway, I do like the HS42, and it is a great headlight–I just like the HS20 (with the SFT40 emitter) more. :+1:

I’ve been using mine around the house, outside, etc., to really get a good “feel” for it, and I gotta say, I love it. I’m using it more as a flashlight, though, because I just can’t get arsed to find the strap to use it that way.

Love the easy access to red, and that it’s got “sticky” modes that I like, ie, it’ll “stick” in red until you change it to something else, vs always having to 2click or 3click or anything.

Like, I forgot to clean out the catboxes and put out the garbage for collection, and it was already starting to get light in the east, so it’d be Mosquito Hell. Shining around in red pretty much made me invisible except for my own IR/CO2 signature, vs attracting every bug in Hell’s Creation right to me like a black hole’s gravity well.

Hmm, I like that. Think I’ll use that in my upcoming review… :skull::skull::skull:

I’m glad you really like yours.

I’ll quickly compare the HS20 to the HS42.
The UI is quite similar, except the HS42 has a red light (that I didn’t know about) and the HS20 has two switches (one for each emitter.)
If the HS20 has both emitters on high, then it’s brighter than the HS42 on high, and the HS20 provides more flood and more throw (with the SFT40 emitter.)
So if you’re a lumen wh0re like me, go with the HS20. :slightly_smiling_face:

Unno, I actually see no use for spot+flood together.

Close-in, it’s flood so I have a wider FOV and can see everything fairly equally without “keyholing”.

Farther-out, throwy is nice for better “reach” than can be achieved by flood.

So they’re really the best of both worlds, but I don’t see any use-case where overlap is what would be needed. Maybe some people would want both, but I just don’t see myself needing it.

Ymmv.

Received mine as well. First impression quite positive. Yes, it is not for modding, no Anduril, it could be lighter or have better head strap, but it have many useful options out of the box.
Wide and/or spot beam both about 5400K. Wide 95cri, spot 62cri;
Red light;
Stabilized brightness for all leds and modes thanks to some kind of step-down driver! (I am pleasantly surprised)
UI needs some polishing , but again its pretty usable.
Type-C charging port.
What to say more. It is kind of China made “Swiss knive” for ordinary user who newer had original one for good price .
I think i will use it for biking.

3 Thanks

Sofirn using Buck drivers? Didn’t expect to witness that in my lifetime :joy:

Sounds like a great versatile headlamp for people who don’t care about modding or anduril.

It is interesting what’s inside , but i feel it won’t be easy to disassemble. I did not test it for stabilization but according to this RU review it have some stabilization and opple shows some PWM.

Look like you finally have satisfaction with Sof. lights

Hehe, I’m never looking a gift horse in the mouth. But I’m very curious.

LoL

I won this headlamp in the giveaway - Sofirn asked me to review as well.

I have been using mine for about a week now.

The headlamp on my head is comfortable despite it’s size and weight. It has the over the top of the head strap.
The head strap mount is molded plastic and holds the light well. the light snaps into the mount with clips which snap around the light body firmly.

The mount also has molded a " tooth " in the center, this tooth engages the straight knurling of the body of the light, the tooth holds the light from rotating so you can “click” to and retain the light at the desired angle.

I used the red light to eliminate two yellowjacket nests, works great for that - three levels of red brightness.
The throw (on high) is impressive for a headlamp, turbo steps down so I didn’t get a good time look around. It gets warm to hot after extended use, sorry no runtimes.
Three levels of throw, and flood.
The flood works well to light up the immediate work area without being harsh.
Moonlight works well for me.
The sample I have - to change led source - red, flood, throw, and both flood and throw I have to go through the flashing modes. It is somewhat bothersome for to me to do this,

The manual is - inaccurate in my sample about changing led source.

The build quality is good to excellent.
USB charging is over two hours. - USB C cable included in the box along with spare o-rings

I find this a versatile, well built , highly functional 18650 headlamp.

Enjoy the HS42. :beers:

Enjoy the HS42.

So glad to hear that you like it, enjoy

Did anybody try it with an 18350 tube? Is it significantly lighter (the battery alone is some 25 g instead of 50 g)? Does it hold well in the head strap?
