【Sofirn IF24 Series】About the on/off status of the flashlight after the rotation button is switched.

Hi, guys

Recently, our R&D team has been discussing whether the IF24 series flashlight’s on/off state requires a memory mode after rotating the magnetic ring.
We hope to hear your suggestions and help us improve this series.
Here is a video link showing the current switch mode:

Thank you so much!

A power switch should act like just that - on/off for the entire device, not for specific modes, and have absolute control.

To me, not a good idea to mix metaphors, so to speak; a mode selection dial should not act as something more than that, and override the power switch.

Button – responsible for power and output level
Dial – responsible for mode selection

According to the other paradigm, the lock symbol should really be a power off symbol, and the button should act only to change levels, and not have the ability to turn the light off.

Some may like the “short cut” as illustrated in the video, but I prefer to keep them separated, logically.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I would also definitely expect the power button to work globally as in if I turn the flashlight off in any mode it stays off when I switch modes.

I don’t like that. If it’s off, it should be off for all modes. Mode memory for on/off should not be a thing.

I agree with a change so that when you rotate the button to a different mode it does not turn on the device. What you propose in the OP does that.

Also please advise when IF24S with sft40 will be available.

Thank you.

+1 here. Thank you.

It’s a pleasure to have you onboard, lkjr!

This. Absolutely this.

Agreed. Rotating the knob should not turn the light back on. Only the power button should do that.

This is also consistent with how other rotary control lights work, like the Sunwayman V11R and Nitecore SRT3.

Rotating the knob should change what mode the light starts in when you actually do press the power button to turn the light on.

On / Off / level / color changes operate by the thumbswitch only. Mode functions operate via the rotary switch. Memory, if applied, should only be active in the current mode, and automatically canceled when switching functions via the rotary. This is the way.

IF24S will be launched and pre-sale in May!

For me too. Off is off via the main (push) switch and overrides all else.

I agree, dial for mode changes only, button for on off/output selection. But would ammend it that memory changes with the mode selection, not cancels any set memory.

As in, when I turn off the side light in medium, and then use 2 other modes, the side light will still come back on in medium when selected again. A permanent memory for each mode so to speak.

Also,
For my preference if Any mode is On , if that ring rotates, Everything goes off. Then need button press to turn on in whatever mode is now selected. Saves you from accidentally rotating that ring from low/moon side light to high poice or disco strobe and frying your retinas

Please, in the IF24S put the glass of the side LEDs halfway between the opacity of IF23 and the transparency of IF24. And if possible, the side LEDs should be 4000/4500K

2 Thanks

I strongly agree with the quoted posts above.

The rotary switch should not activate the LEDs in any mode until the power button is pressed. I got an IF24 a few days ago. I guess it is the production version. It looks like they did not take the advice offered above. It is very difficult to not ruin my night vision when using the rotary switch to change LEDs. Too bad because overall I like the light,

Perhaps, a memory for the last state f the LEDs would be good. But much better, have to rotary switch do nothing besides switching the LEDs to use. Always wait for the power button to activate them regardless of what is done with the rotary switch.

Memory mode for each set of Leds would be great. More so if it can be turned off. Though just defaulting to the lowest level is fine on a light like this.

Over all I like the light, but the way it works now is pretty much a deal killer for me. I just can’t have my night vision completely reset when all I want to do is change the LEDs in use.

PS, I know this is an older thread, but I am hoping @Sofirn is still watching it. Maybe the response can be taken into consideration for the next batch.

Use the KISS Principle (Keep It Simple Stupid)
The on/off button for turning the light on and off.
The mode dial for selecting modes.

Now that the IF23 and IF24 have kind of launched this product family, is there any interest in a similar design aimed directly at the rear bike light market? The IF23 is already pretty good for this application: the side emitter emits a good amount of red light in a decent beam pattern at an intensity sufficient to attract attention without introducing too much glare. It would not take too much work to adapt a version that would be very good for cyclists.

These are a couple of product changes that could make an IFxx series light more attractive for cyclists:

  • aggressively waterproofing the electronics and mechanics of the light (potting the electronics? Deeper cap screw to allow two O-ring seals?)

  • springs at both ends of the cell contact to better deal with bumpy roads

  • adjustable brightness for the red LED output

  • channels similar to the current pocket clip channel at both ends of the light, and around the full circumference, to allow fastening to a seatpost with velcro cinch straps or zip-ties

  • a configurable piezo buzzer in the low voltage circuit to protect riders from depleting the battery on a long ride and then lacking the protection of the rear light

  • perhaps two sets of side COB emitters instead of one, at 90 degrees to each other, to increase side visibility

I gather that the IF24 PRO does turn on when you rotate the dial, is there going to be an updated version which has the on/off and the rotating dial separate? I would be very interested if so.

Also, are there any plans for a 21700 version of this with power bank function (like the IF23, but with buck driver)?

I doubt it. They asked on here if we wanted the light to turn on when changing modes on the IF24 Pro, everyone said no, they did it anyway.
