The $29 price has ben ongoing since Christmas. From what I recall, the head on the Skyline 1 is specially constructed so not interchangeable and not moddable. Besides being a big head, it also has a variable output interface. I don't own one, but from the reports and testing I've seen, there are better throw options out there, but you won't likley find another light of the build quality of the SKyline 1 for $30.
Last week I was looking for good looking intresting mod host for neutral xp-g/xm-l and remembered Skyline II. Solarforce-sales had removed this from web site because it was out of stock (contacted them and they have 2 last left for 39.90 a piece + 2 registered shipping. Too much for just an host) and it costs 60 dollars on ebay/other places. The cheapest one is from lighthound (34,99 w/o shipping). SF-sales original discount price of 28.5 would have been fine.
skyline series - r2 could be driven harder, driver has visible PWM in lower modes, not much spill from reflector (skyline I) but the quality of host is top notch.
Nice info and a well made light. One of the things on my list is to acquire a dedicated R2 thrower of some sorts whether it be reflectored or aspheric. I havent really dug into it yet so Im not sure what route I will take.
