Spotlight Definition?

Is there true consensus of what a spotlight is? Is it merely a largish flashlight with a handle or is there a difference in battery power or does it even include those that are automotive electrical system powered? Does it even need to be hand held or does it include the old car windshield pillar mounted ones which could be aimed via a handle inside the car? Does it include all of the above including incandescent, HID, LED and even carbon arc portable or vehicle mounted lights? What are the limits, if any?

Hi…………
Spotlight actually means A powerful light focused so as to illuminate a small area, usually mounted so that it can be directed at will. In different way it is a brilliant narrowly focused light, as on an automobile, used for spotting objects.

Anything more throwy then a Convoy S2
Its an arbitrary benchmark but a useful one IMO :wink:

Well, when a singer is on-stage and the spotlight is on him, only him, or his face and some part of his body is illuminated.

That’s my understanding of a spotlight.

I asked as a Amazon search for “Spotlight” mainly shows what I would refer to as pistol grip battery driven flashlights. Not particularly narrow beam output lights just as the old auto windshield pillar mounted lights were not very narrow beam. A few with top handles and also a lot of 12V versions which are directly powered from a car’s cigarette lighter socket.

I agree that for stage lighting the “Spotlight” was a narrow highlighting beam but not sure it is/was for all forms of spotlight.

Well that is not a Victorian Spotlight.

Or in the limelight.

Haha. Evolutionary.

This is really a grey area sometimes, to some people.

If we look at all the previous discussions in BLF about how to differentiate a thrower and a flooder, I think the way most BLF’er define a spotlight is as below:

1. If a light that produces 50kcd pencil beam (or very focused) beam, then it is classified as spotlight;
2. If you have a modded TR-J18 which produces 100kcd, and its light spread out at longer distance, it is classified as a flooder.

Therefore sometimes a “flooder” can actually out-throw a “dedicated spotlight”, lol.
