PinkPanda, I almost went out last night…late…to get beamshots but didn’t. I’ll be sure and do that tonight.
I was looking at the tint in comparison to the MT-G2 in my M8 and it’s warmer, almost like the old lights of yesteryear. This one is the N tint bin at 4500 Kelvin. With an Panasonic PF it pulls just over 10A, which is just about right.
lawallac, how do you like the SBT-90? I’ll probably end up getting the SBT-70 with it’s round die face, just because of it’s looks. I’m not too stoked on how many lumens they put out for the amount of power consumed, but it makes me appreciate the Cree’s more. I was getting similar lumens from 6A before removing the XM-L2 U2 1A. With the Cree’s, 6A is pretty much the ceiling for a single cell light, boy was I surprised to see that first 15.49A reading!!!
Thought about limiting current through the driver firmware but since it’s so easy to control it with battery choice, I’ll leave it full house so I can play with 16 or 8 or whatever at will.
Initially, it didn’t seem to produce the amount of heat I was expecting to see. But it WILL get hot, I’ve just got so much copper it took a while for it to saturate coming from room temperature (8+ ounces)
I’ll try to remember to get my base 97 yd shots this evening so I’ll have some beamshots…heck+ I +don’t even know what the beam profile looks like with some distance to it! lol
Isn’t the sbt70 just using masking over the corners to make it appear round? The sbt90 is awesome. Unless you run it to at least 12 or 13A or more it won’t be worth it. Something like a K40vn running xml2 at 5 or 6A has only a small amount more reach but has around a thousand less lumens.
They like to brag it up, like it’s important, so they must’ve gone to some trouble to make it like that. I have no idea what difference, if any, it would make in a flashlight. Seems likely though, to have a round light source going into a round reflector, instead of the square source into round that we use.
Got any pics of that SBT-90 sitting inside the reflector? Love seeing em…

The two VPT3 lights have 78mm reflectors, CBT140 reflectors, and the other VPTs have 73mm reflectors.
Only the one below has SBT90. I think it was a 78.00 LED at the time and prices are a little lower, but not much, but the bins are a bit higher.
With the UV, you can see the apparent die size. The brightly glowing one is a 5700 SST90. To it’s right is a dedomed 4500 SST90, then the SBT90. !
I took beamshots at wide and zoom angles, with the Panasonic PF giving 10.12A and the 20R doing right at 16A. These are my standard shot, 97 yds to the red oil drum, Canon G1X at ISO1600 f/5.8 at 1/2 second. The wide angle shots are f/5.6. Base is the Panasonic, mouseover for the Samsung. (1428 lumens vs 1780 lumens)
