SST12 now available

I see the SST12 is now available. Has anyone tried these yet? Digikey has 5000k, 5700, and 6500. I’m sure other places have them but I happen to be building a digikey order and noticed them.

Unfortunately the tint bins are grouped together so it will be a lottery. Fortunately, they are quite affordable and when ordering 10 they are less than a dollar each.

Per the datasheets, SST12 has 1.2 sq. mm emitting area vs the 2.0 sq. mm of the SST20. So these could make for pretty good throwers depending upon how hard they can be driven. I’ll order all three CCTs for a tint comparison and sacrifice a few to high currents, but I don’t have equipment for in-depth tests.

I ordered a couple together with a Zoomie host to throw them into

So I can report on how nice they look in two weeks or so probably

Maybe you could take the lux values when using a medium/small-sized reflector, and compare to a throwy LED with known values like the Osram W2? It should at least give a decent guess to the performance. I also wonder if they could be dedomed/sliced for an even higher intensity, at the cost of lumens.

Shame that djozz isn’t doing regular tests anymore and maukka has gone inactive, I would be very curious how their lumens/mm² compares to other LEDs with a area below 2 sq mm (like the W1 and XP-P), but that can’t be done without a lumen measurement.

Hopefully the 95cri 4000k, 3500k, 3000k, and 2700k version also become available soon, it could be an interesting alternative to the Cree XP-P in warm/neutral throwers.

It’s probably time I get something that can at least measure lux. I’d find that useful for the modding I do and I’d be happy share lux info on various emitters using a consistent host light. That’s something I don’t recall seeing very often but I think would be super helpful.

BTW, I’m loving the 3000k 90 CRI XPP.

Is their footprint known?

Standard 3535 footprint according to the datasheet.

I have a Uni-T UT383BT lux meter, good value and easy to use while remaining reasonably accurate. Available on amazon and also aliexpress for a lower price (directly from uni-t), which is nice.

Awesome. Thanks for the recommendation.

I’m also considering an Oppel light master for the added features.

Good idea, make sure to get the opple 3, the opple 4 still has some problems with callibration and DUV accuracy

I think this LED will be very promising in multi emitter lights like Hank’s boost driver lights.

I think so too, at least that’s my hope. Being a domed LED perhaps they will produce a nicer beam than domeless LEDs in the typical triple/quad optics. And I’m sure it won’t be long until we try slicing/de-doming them.

I’ll have to get that order placed tomorrow. Too many flashlight projects and not enough free time.

The 5700k is h4 bin in this page.

The bag shows Luminus, but the images on AE show Yinding. Can anyone explain?

From what I’ve gathered, they are a (likely not authorized) reseller. I’ve bought some other LEDs from that store when they’re unavailable elsewhere (like the Osram CULNM1) and they looked identical to the same model of LED from other sources.

KD is now selling these on a triple with an optic. Seems like a pretty good deal. They have more options as singles / bare LEDs.

Seems my order will arrive in the next few days. I know the domeless round Yinding is not very forgiving in a reflector, but what are the odds of the SST12 producing a good beam in a D4V2?

Guess I’ll replace the 3000K SST20 anyway with something else since the light quality is terrible, but I am curious what you all think.

I think the odds of a good looking beam are better due to the dome, but I’d test them out in something a little easier to mod then a D4V2. Nobody knows what the tint will look like and how hard they can be driven.

I like to test new LEDs in an S2+. Going from bare LED to in the light takes about 5 min after a little practice. I have smooth and OP reflectors and a variety of TIRs I can try.

The D4v2 works fine with the osram W1 and cree XP-P, so I think it should be fine with the SST12. Worst case, it might have some dark rings if using the top-lens optic.

Ultra nice.

Edit: Judging from looking into the reflektor, the die seems to be round.
