I use manker USBC and have had pretty good luck, Plus they’re advertised as 4A max CDR (920mah). I think 2/8 had problems at turbo, but one of those 2 was able to ramp up to turbo without tripping.
Good to know there’s another option, thanks for sharing!
thanks for sharing your first hand experience w Manker USB 14500
The possibility of Turbo tripping protection on the USB battery is a valid concern to consider. Im not a Turbo user myself, but the subject interests me. Im glad you bring it up.
I have read some reports from users of the Lumintop labeled USB cells, that TS10 Turbo does not trip the protection. Im slightly skeptical because I think all the USB cells are made in the same place and just get different branding wrappers.
Maybe the protection circuit is more likely to trip on Turbo using a TS10, when the battery is more than half discharged. Im not sure.
It is not a primary concern for me, because I disable Turbo on my lights.
The question of tripping protection when using a Protected battery in a D3AA has not been tested yet.
the anti protected postion:
The D3AA webpage mentions that it does not work with Protected cells.
the pro protection position:
It is possible Emisar assumes Protection implies a longer battery. Protected cells tend to be over 52mm long, whereas the USB 14500 cells are very close to the 50mm length of an Eneloop and Alkaline button top.
Too long a battery can prevent the tailcap from closing far enough for the tailcap contact ring, to make contact with the unanodised end of the body tube.
The D3AA does not use a FET, and does not have as high a Turbo as the TS10. It may not draw as much power on Turbo as a TS10… we shall see.
update, I tested a USB-C in my D3AA and it works great for me…
With floor at 3/150 and ceiling of 110/150, and Wurkkos 14500 battery (from TS10) at 4.06V or Lumintop USB 14500 at 3.92V, using 7 steps and Turbo off, with DeDomed 4500K 519a:
I just tested with a FWAA and could not get the Lumintop battery to trigger protections even with direct drive (3x 519A, FET+1 driver at turbo). Thermal protection of the light kicked in before the battery had any issues. D3AA has more thermal mass, but should probably have similar results.
I’m using Skilhunt USB-C 14500 cell in my D3AA and when you are not a turbo person it is ok!
Cell is rated at 3A so I’ve limited the ceiling for about 130 and turn off turbo. Still you have a decent amount of light!
PS. only when I cycle through strobes, candle mode etc. and when enters tactical strobe, which blast at full power then protection triggers and I’m unable to change to next strobe mode it trips every time I enter strobe group.
Only solution is to inert normal cell and change it or compile own version of software
Thanks for your report
I just tried my D3AA on Tactical Strobe w Lumintop USB 14500 at 3.90V and it did Not trip protection… Im able to cycle through all the strobe modes. Everything works.
Even with Turbo enabled, neither Turbo nor Tactical Strobe causes my Lumintop USB 14500 to trip protection. The battery is at 3.88V
is it possible your battery is tripping due to a lower voltage?
is the protection doing a Full shut off, so the battery reads 0V and must be placed on a charger to reset the protection to off?
or does simply loosening and retightening the tail, allow the USB battery to work again?
I just fully charged my Lumintop USB 14500, and enabled Turbo on my D3AA.
Turbo does not trip protection
Tactical Strobe does not trip protection either. It also does not freeze on TacStrobe.
fwiw, what you describe is not what I consider Fully Tripped Protection, which I define as the battery shutting off completely, and reading 0V on my DMM. None of that is happening in your report, nor mine.
I have a Skilhunt USB 14500 coming in a few days… I suspect it is the same battery, just a different branded wrapper. I will try to remember to retest, for comparison sake.
Maybe this protection board works in different way. In my case for sure it trips and can be released by unscrewing tailcap. So maybe it recognizes the load. Same happens with TS10.
I’d even charged it once and recorded video
I’m using Vapcell H10s in my D3AA, but have tested the Lumintop USB 14500 in it and it was fine. I do disable turbo and never use strobe, but it works just fine for all other functions including max ramp. I also tried the USB 14500 that came with my Loop SK03 with the same results. It’s certainly an option I’d consider if I thought I’d need to charge on the go.
