Supbeam X60 Group Buy - Interest and Discussion Thread - Dangerous problem discovered!

Having received my second opus bt-c3100 charger i decided to retest my trustfire battery i have been boasting about.I thought maybe the charger was screwed for me to be averaging a full 1000mah higher than previous tests i had read.
Well folks it looks like trustfire have been producing some good batteries lately given i brought two from ebay and two from amazon.
The results are in .The repeat test on the battery that did 5360mah first time, produced 5367mah second time around.
i wholeheartedly recommend buying on ebay armed with a bt-c3100.
firstly i have dropped lucky with my 26650,s .and thanks to my tester know its safe to buy more from both sources again.
Also i brought 20 cheap 18650 ,5000mah batteries(yellow) off ebay. tested them and found they ranged from 200mahh-2400mah(laptop pulls?).so i complained to seller that average was only 1100mah and that they were so varied. instant refund.
then i ordered ten more and asked them to try to do better .next ten were very consistent but only 800mah average which i pointed out (again the reply was instant refund). so £21 worth of batteries all free of charge because i have a tester.ebay is as safe as houses if you know your rights. The odds are always stacked in the buyers favour.

Where or who did you get the batts from on Ebay?

its funny you ask that. before receiving the batteries i informed the seller about copies existing on ebay ,and warned hi i would test on arrival.he replied “very sorry they are made in china”.
then after testing i sent this message
Dear ilastone,

thank you for your prompt posting.I tested batteries just as i said i would .Target power was 4400mah(considered very good figure). To my amazement they tested 5360mah,and 5208mah.
This not only proves your’s are genuine but also a very good batch . If you add to your title recently tested at over 5000mah .i can gladly send you photographic evidence of results.
your sales could double ,triple ,quadruple ,if people know yours are genuine ,plus a good batch, plus a good price.
best wishes nigel westwood.

THIS WAS ILASTONE,S REPLY
Dear ,Thanks for your kind email,
Sorry for that,we always check items before sent them out, maybe there’s something wrong in the shipping,
So what do you suggest us to do?
How about refunding you 2 GBP money for compensation?
and you can keep the item as gift?
do you agree?
Good day

PMSL

They weren’t the target 4400, so you get a refund! Incredible!

No .I just highlight I tried to inform the guy he could sell more if he posted my test results ,but he thought I was complaining.
I bet half of Chinese sellers can’t translate English.but 98% of English sellers can’t read Chinese so I still respect them for trying their best.

Race, you do realize don’t you that the amperage reading you’re showing is most likely wrong?

Alligator clips, thin leads, cheap DMM…it’s likely MORE than what your’e seeing there. Just saying.

I’m interested and depending on price.

New, comparatively, to the DMM game and taking these measurements. When I was first starting to mod, my meter and it’s stock probes were always well below what others posted. The conversation over many different posts and from many different people indicated the small leads would never accurately display current due to that resistance. I had stepped up to 12ga leads and found a big difference. Now I use a clamp meter with a loop on the negative lead from the emitter in 20ga silicone wire that’s just long enough to allow the clamp into the circuit.

If this X60 could be driven to those levels, 5x XM-L2’s would be impressive indeed!

Do you find at that level in your TK75 that heat is an issue? I’m wondering, with modifications, at what point the gains are offset by the losses. I like the beamshots on the X60, seems to be a good balance of throw and spill, so I’m wondering about the practical ramifications of modding such a light. Could it be possible that a factory offering is getting close to an optimum level and modding isn’t necessary, as it were? The comments about the battery carrier acting up once modified and other such items leads me to believe that such a light as this one has become complicated, with it’s built in charging and all that it brings to the table.

Could it be that they actually designed it, purpose built, to act up if tampered with? I can only assume that the selection of components could do this, instead of using components with a higher ceiling of tolerance they could easily use the bare minimums in an effort to maintain their own standards. Pride, at the maufacturers level? Or just coincidental?

Only looking at these possibilities in terms of whether or not to attempt modifying this light, should I get lucky enough to get in on this buy.

Nice build on the TK…. enjoy!

The only stock light that is comparable to the X60 is the fenix rc40. The RC40 is far more overbuilt though. Massive amount of aluminum, mass, and it's not driven as hard.

IMO, the stock X60 is getting pretty close to the edge of what the light should be doing. Without a complete rebuild like Racer86 did on the tk75, the gains would be negligible (Vinh has been able to get maybe an extra thousand lumens out of them) and really the only worthwhile option becomes dedoming, or swapping LEDs for a different tint.

I fully agree.

Alex, I added you to the list and will PM you the price when this group buy starts.

Update:

My X60 just arrived.

Some hurried initial thoughts:

WOW!… uh, yeah. This one is friggen bright as hell! I immediately find myself in great anticipation of night time to give it a thorough work-out. The initial inspection looks very good so far. The carrying case is well padded and holds the light and its accessories very snugly to prevent any movement or damage during transport. The anodizing looks flawless and matches with the other parts of the light. I’ll get it out into the sunlight for some photos and a better look soon. I just popped in a fresh set of Panasonic protected NCR18650B and they fit with about 1mm to spare before full spring compression inside the carrier. The Carrier is fairly rigid and flex free while loading cells. In the hand with cells loaded, its not nearly as heavy as I had imagined it to be. Just as I had expected, I can EASILY change modes during single hand carry. The center of gravity is about 1” after the mode selector ring, so its perfectly balanced (with cells loaded). All the emitters are perfectly centered within their reflector holes and the reflective surfaces appear to be perfectly smooth, flawless and ultra high luster. All O-rings came properly lubed. The threads are perfectly square cut and provide proper positive engagement, and with no binding or uneven torque noted during assembly and dis-assembly during several trials. I “played dumb” and deliberately tried to cross thread the battery tube at the head and could easily detect when I had the alignment correct or not for proper engagement. While the light is on, a slight twist of the battery tube to loosen it kills power to the emitters for a positive lockout (just in case it gets turned on while bouncing around in your gear bag during Navy Seal combat assaults). While in lock-out and the light activated via the clicky button switch on the back, the tiny power indicator light on the back of the battery tube remains on, but that’s completely acceptable compared to melting everything inside your assault bag by 5 emitters blasting away without your knowing. :stuck_out_tongue: The selector ring tolerances are tight with absolutely no slop or play, not difficult to operate during one hand carry and have well defined detents to locate positive mode changes. I ratcheted the heck out of it and it didnt lose any of its close tolerances… so it should provide many good years of service for the Konan types. There were a few scares upon very close inspection of what appeared to be small scratches in the anodizing caused by the metal clasps from the carrying strap that the light was resting on while inside its carrying box. They came right off with a rub from a damp T-shirt, but I will mention this to Acebeam to ask them to insert each strap into a plastic bag for added insurance against the potential rough rides the delivery services might encounter. So far, all positive observations, but I have yet to give it a good thrashing. Its been sitting in turbo mode while face down in a pot of water for an initial burn-in as I write this. After the discharge, its off to be photographed and ran through an industrial shredder to test its strength. Alright, we’ll skip the shredder for now. It is definitely a thing of beautiful to behold.

More coming soon…

OP updated.

Be nice to people, no need to blind anyone just cause you can!

Anxiously awaiting photo’s and beamshots…

Awesome news and the news I waiting on before dropping some coin on a matching set of 6 cells specifically for this torch!

Can’t wait to see your full review! Thanks for the update, BLF might get very slow to load tonight with all the traffic you are going to induce.

I hate when that happens.

Don't waste energy, at least drop a tea bag or two in there.

FlashPilot, please please do let us know about the modding capabilities of the light. Most of us, including you, are modders and we always risk damaging the light in pursuit of pushing the light to the bleeding edge. Of course we know that we are forfeiting the manufacturer’s warranty when we poke around with the light.

You may feel like the light doesn’t need extra tuning but some of us just can’t have stock lights. I do wish your sample provides as much information as it is possible within your abilities, and where we’re void in knowledge is how far we can push it. Selfbuilt and gopajti both have very detailed reviews, but none on the modding capabilities and I feel it would be best if you can fill us in that aspect. Thanks!

I own (4) 18650 cells total. Been at this hobby for 3 years now. I’m not buying this light as much as I want it as I would have to purchase an additional (6) cells. Not gunna happen. Not gunna happen. I have restraint. Oh, take my name off the list ‘after’ you PM me the price

ETA on price?
