Tear down of the $8.98 HD Defiant 3D XM-L2

made a trip to my local HD and no luck. Nowhere to be found even at regular price. Seems like a great deal at $9. I like the looks of it.

Nice breakdown thread. Thank you Dchomak!

All in all, it appears to be better quality than the DST. Man, that is one meaty looking pill. The driver looks to be more than I expected too. What are the modes like?

I tried to get them to price match you lucky guys in the east US, but got a firm “Nope.” :frowning:

Stuck with the next level up prices. $19 for this beaut, $9 for the 4c spotlight, etc.

This light looks like a beefier version of the DST in all areas except the head. I can’t quite definitively tell because I’m on mobile, but the 3D head has a smaller diameter I believe?

Modes?, well there are 2.
One mode is really, really bright and the other is really dark. Of course if you are outside during the daytime, then not so much.

Yeah, it’s just on and off, but from the looks of the driver, I bet there are more. They just need to be unlocked.
There are 2 chips, one a mem2306 is a MOSFET, the other I can’t read the numbers. The negative wire to the LED is connected to L-. There is another pad that reads L1. I am going to guess that will have the modes.

Yes, if I measure the DST at 58mm then the 3D measures at 54mm. Of course it is not as deep as well. It does not throw anywhere near as well as the DST

Yeah, 2 - 32650’s and a spacer with the right driver and wow.

Nope, the second L- pad yields the same mode as original, on and off at the same brightness.

Can you read any numbers off the second chip on the driver? Maybe someone here could help identify the driver

That chip that looks like a posible mcu does not appear to be sanded/ground down. On my screen, it looks like a marker may have been taken to it. I wonder if alcohol would reveal the label. Go get some Glenlivet and see if you starts seeing numbers and letters.

Sorry to take so long on this, but with each shot of Glenlivet, I could only see less and less.
Then I realized you wanted me to use it to wipe the chip!

Here it is, all cleaned up.

LOL. Well, that label means absolutely nothing to me. Google seems to think nothing of it too. Thanks for taking the time to clean, snap, and post Dcho man.

EDIT: The LOL was for your joke, not that the label means nothing. I've been searching, but I just can't find anything. The label appears to say "mc10p3108s".

That’s how I read it too. No part of that string means anything to Google or Bing. I will peak at another driver. It seems to me that any driver that sophisticated HAS to have modes somewhere!

Besides, maybe I’ll have to break out the Glenlivet again

+1! (Nice breakdown thread. Thank you Dchomak!)

Great breakdown! I went to the store and got 3 more today lol. I’ll be doing an MT-G2 build with one of them.

Well done! Thanks for taking the time to post this. Im sitting on a ton of these, and its great to see that they are so well constructed. This light shares the same size reflector as the Defiant ArmorMax 3D Tactical Flashlight, although they are not identical when viewed from the outside of the reflector. The ArmorMax is a more compact light (relatively speaking  ) with its tail clicky, smaller head surface and has a 3 mode driver, but it lacks the convenience of a forward mounted switch. The 58mm AR lens is slightly small but fits without issue. The Armormax benefited from a copper wire mod in the tail and forward contact. I suspect the 650 will benefit from the same mods.

sand down that centering ring already!

Yup…I have one of these, this is the one I was planning on modding with the new Knuckle Head V3.0 OSHPark by Mattaus…3x 18650’s to a XM-L2 on a copper sinkpad would probably do nicely!

And yes, first mod, take that centering ring plasting piece around the emitter, sand that stupid lip shrouding the emitter, that is where those rings are coming from

$ 9.— is just crazy cheap…

I think the pill is also pretty much hollow, just a thin platform for the star, then like an inch under that platform all the way to the driver location, I wonder if filling that with silicon would add some mass and heat dissipation capability

Try silicon carbide mixed with duct seal, or fill the pill with copper ground wire & solder (couldn't find links to my posts about this, but I got the idea from Chicago X).
