I hope they start churning out batteries and the III sells at the 35k price point
Thank you!
“the facility will eventually produce 35 GWh of cells and 50 GWh of packs per year by 2020. ”
So they’ll produce about 3.5 billion cells per year. Or 175,000,000 Kg of cells per year.
Thats a lot of weight, i wonder how much ground space would be needed to hold it all
I can’t see those cells functioning as utility level energy storage as is one of their plans, lithium cells are just not durable enough or have enough longevity.
Here you go:
If you store these cells vertically and only one layer (not multiple cells on top of each other) then you will fill approximately 1.4km2 (0.54 squred miles) per year.
I considered that a cell takes 4cm2 each for this calculation.
Sounds less inpressive than when you consider the weight!
That is very cool!! Good for Tesla and great for the workers who will get all those jobs.
One of the things that hurt Tesla lately other than the fires was that a few states are giving them a rough time. The major car companies all have this deal where they sell their cars through dealerships. Which is fine and all. The bad part is that they have lobbied a bunch of states to make it a LAW that you must sell your cars though dealerships. All new cars that is. So these states are demanding that Tesla stop selling their cars in their states unless they put up dealerships that sell and service the cars. Well that stinks because it’s going to drive up the costs of Tesla’s already pricy cars. This is nothing more than protectionism coming from the big car manufacturers. They are hoping to keep small car companies from being successful. Well actually they are hoping they go bankrupt.
Owned by the Chinese?
I think that happened in New Jersey, I didn’t know it was also was enforced in other States.
If this is enforced in some States, some will cry protectionism.
If it is not enforced, then others will cry favoritism.
Most of the “green” energy companies that have taken public money have already gone bankrupt. As far as I can tell, this endevour does not include any government (public) money. That money could come from loans, direct investment or tax breaks. It would be one of the first attempts made by the private sector and that alone, in my opinion, GREATLY increases its chance for success.
That is, if it is actually ever built. Because if it won’t be successful, It won’t be built.
tesla shareholder values have multiplied tenfold within the past 11 months
good times for charger companies
Will any of these cells be used outside of Tesla though?
