There must be some great gasoline in Texas... De-domed in less than 2 hours?

i would avoid using it for your car, fuel injectors can get very picky, and the last thing you want to find out is that high temps caused the silicone to settle in your intake manifold
a lawnmower won’t be a problem, carburetors are far more forgiving

I definitely wouldn’t put it back in a vehicle; better safe than sorry.

Just use a small amount, maybe in a baby food jar? Then you’re only out maybe ~10cents in gas.

I just successfully de-domed my XM-L T6 with gas in about 2 hours. Just swished it around in the jar and it came right off.

So, a little of the silicone tends to stay around the wires. Don't take it off, put it back in the gas and let it melt off, or leave it where it is. Both XM-L2 leds I had are now toast. Broken wires. My god, those wires are so small I can't even see them without a magnifying glass and even then I can't see them!Yell I think the filtered gas will go back in the car. I don't think there's enough silicone to hurt, since the domes themselves never melted, just where they adhere to the led.

I never did really like throwers anyhow. Now I'm stuck with XM-L T6 leds left. Oh well, live and learn. That's a very costly way to learn that I can't see shute any more...Sealed

Welcome in the club…I have also broken a wire on a xml2 this week, but only one, so the led still works( not sure what I will do with it…)
These wires are damn small and sensitive.

I don’t know about octane boost, but look at the nice oily bubble the solved dome left in the gas. If this just doesn’t look like perfect injection pump lube I don’t know what. :smiley:

Btw, i’m quite glad my domes weren’t dissolved completely but left a little material underneath the bond wires to support them.
So far no broken wires, even mechanical de-doming worked nicely. ‘knocks on wood’ :wink:

Oh boy, tuff way to learn - I use a 20x loop, and been getting better at cleaning around the wires with a toothpick, but still, I'll leave some remnants around and under them. On the XM-L2's, I've experimeted with full cleaning on the side wire (not needed) and found it breaks very easily, so I don't dare to attempt 100% around the 2 primary wires. I'll squirt isop. alcohol directly on the emitter to help wash away any loose remnants - works great, but if not 100%, that's fine - better to leave some remnants...

I think I will leave a little silicone around the wires. Will this affect the beam? I will use XM-L in C8 flashlight.

I usually do this - only if the silicone is over the yellow phosphor of the emitter would there be an effect.

I would highly recommended anyone to leave the silicone bits on the wires.

Even if you don’t touch the emitter afterwards, there are still risks of breaking the tiny wires when installing the emitter e.g by hitting reflector or hit by driver wire during soldering.

Those bits don’t hurt the dedome beam but help strengthening the wires quite a lot. Without them, the wires are very fragile and will break at every chance they got.

This is my first de-domed XM-L U3.

I waited about 4 hours and then realized that I have to push the dome to fall.

Good job FlashLion! Now fire it up and see what tint you have, should be interesting to see what the U3 does when back in a light…

OL, what brand and octane rating gas did you use for your fast dedome? Maybe there is some additive in that gas brand that sped up the dedoming process…

I am not sure it is really U3 because it was warmer(yellowish) tint than a few XM-L T6.
Now it is even warmer tint,a little greenish(Edit: If I compare it to good white light,it is really greenish),but not so annoyingly.I like it more now,because I prefer warm white for outdoor use,especially in foggy weather.

So I dropped a DST stock emitter (xml iirc) into some regular 87 octane gas about 24 hours ago….

Haha, as I was typing that I was swirling the gas around in the sealed container and the dang thing finally popped off.
