I have read some mixed opinions everywhere and thought of asking here since I couldn’t search any existing threads. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with their reliability and safety? Specifically just charging though since it does not support data transfer. Not that I’m aware of at least.
I love these. I have them on about all my devices. I would highly recommend the ones with cords with the articultated tips. Also note if you have ultra fast charging capable devices you may lose that capability when using the tips. But for legacy devices using usb-b like ps4 controllers, these are amazing. Most of the kits come with 3 tips per cord. I’ve got at least 10 cords. I have one in my usb-c plug in my LT-1 which makes it even easier to charge.
Also, you’ll want to find the ones with the dimmest lights. The blue on some of these is far too bright to have in a bedroom.
Same, use them all the time - I just leave the little ends in the devices. Stops all sorts of accidents (dog, kids, me etc snagging leads and dropping tablet / phone to floor etc) the magnet disconnects first.
Couldn’t recommend them enough.
I’ve also found that kids are way more likely to charge their own devices when they have these attached. I even charge usb battery packs, with them. Virtually anything that doesn’t require the data connection or have an inaccessible usb- like emisar lights has one of these. But for usb-b devices or lights like TN CatV they are a game changer. Usb-b was one of the worst ever and it seemed to last from the longest.
Thanks or the feedback. I’m just a bit worried since I read of it breaking the device. Any specific brands you guys use?
By articulated you mean like this? Thanks for the note on fast charging. I rarely use it though with concerns of battery life and heat.
There are magnetic charging cables that do support data transfer and/or QC 2.0/3.0 or even USB PD. With higher charging rates, they can get a bit "hot" though.
I don’t plan on using it with devices that has data transfer capabilities really. Sucks to break the connection and stop the transfer. Good to know QC2/3 exists for them though. Better have it and not need it than need it and not have it I guess
There are a ton of them out there. Most negative reviews involve broken inserts. Anyone have a recommendation? I have my eye on these inexpensive ones:

I’ll never use them again. I used to leave the magnetic tip on my phone so the cable was on my desk. Very handy but one day, while working I smelled some burning plastic. A paper clip has been attracted by the cable’s magnet and was shorting. The cable has melted and was crazy hot. I realized that it’s a big fire danger and I’m not responsible enough to use these cables.
I can see that happening. One model shut off when not connected but I don’t remember which one. One problem I can imagine is the phone jack shorting the same way and bricking the phone.
Magnetic cables like the one pictured above with the positive and negative terminals that are exposed are the only ones prone to that. Other mag cable designs have very, very, very low likelihood of that happening.
AFAIK the phone's USB port under normal circumstances is just "passive", waiting for power and/or data input. Shorting the contacts shouldn't cause any trouble unless for some very weird circumstance when the contacts shorted it also activated the OTG function which caused the phone to send power out from its USB port.
Do you recall if yours was the same as the one showed above?
Do you happen to know what to look for? You mean the one with 4 pins and oval rather than round?
I don’t think so, mine was from a couple years ago. The one pictured here seems a lot better.
Yeah that’s exactly what I like. Also the blue light window is way smaller, which is good.

Hopefully they strayed from that bad design then.

I guess it does lessen the chance it’ll detach itself when bumped into. Have you had any cable failures yet or bad experiences in general?

Yup, something like this.
