Okay y’all on the three cell maglite …I’m looking for the tight beam powerful mod looking for answers and knowledge …come on Mr Yoda.. I’m willing to learn
I think everyone on this forum will recommend you move on from Maglite on to more current technology.
Alrighty well thanks for your knowledgeable opinion..
I definitely agree. I bought a series of lights when I was a bike commuter and then stopped buying lights about 10 years ago as I didn’t need more. I recently spent all of $20 and got a Wurkos T10SG that outshines any of my old lights and it’s much smaller.
I don’t know what it would take to modify your old Maglite, but I bet you could buy something better for a reasonable cost.
Are you fully commited to a 3D mag mod, or are you open to suggestions about other lights?
There are better lights available, but is you want to do something with the Mag, there are options. How much are you willing to spend? Yes you can spend much more on good mods than what you can get a new light with higher performance… But I have a few Mags that I hold onto just because they are like old friends.
Take a look here
Aww, I was hoping you were going to pull out some pictures of old FiveMega battery cradles or reflectors from way back when.
I could have, but sort of wanted to point him to something he could actually buy, today. I played with hot wire stuff for a bit. Not practical. All of the Mags I still have are LEDs now. But they have upgraded switches, UCL coated glass and metal reflectors… Those were the days. Also using 10 Ah NiMH cells…
Darn things run for many hours,
I’m looking into newer technology now
I am on a budget
What’s your use case? How much light do you need? Does it need to fit in a pocket? So you mind changing batteries in an external charger, or would you rather have built in charging?
Can’t say I’m familiar with that light. Nonetheless, going back to my previous questions, how do you intend on using this light? Do you mind charging batteries externally, or do you require the ability to charge the battery within the light?
I have the equipment for charging batteries. And yes I want to go to pocket size. I have a mini tactical a50 but I’m tired of the square beam .wanting to get close as I can to that lep Beam . The sft 12 I’m new so don’t judge me I want to learn
No judgment here. I was out of the hobby for close to 20 years, and a lot has changed. There are round emitters, reflectors, TIRs, mules, aspheric, and lots of odds and ends.
Do you have some existing old stock batteries that are viable? If so, do you know if they’re 18650, perhaps RCR123A/16340 batteries?
For general purpose, the Wurkkos FC11c is a good all-rounder for most people, with a nice set of features. The Sofirn SR12 is similar, though aimed more towards a throwier beam. If you don’t mind charging your own batteries, I’m partial to what’s available from Convoy, though it can be a little overwhelming initially.
Stick around. There’s a friendly bunch around here with lots of knowledge.
So you are NOT looking for Mag Light Mods… Ok. It was hard to tell from your first post. It sounds like you want a thrower since you mentioned LEPs. Can you give us any more specifics on what you need?
The question still remains…You said you are on a budget… So how much money will that budget allow you to spend on a flashlight? Any answers I would give will depend on how much you can spend.
I guess the maglite is a thing of the past I was hoping there was some knowledge on How to incorporate this in it. Anyways I have other host that it can go in ..really all I need is a driver and the Pcb board if I’m saying it Right… Correct me if I’m wrong thanks
it would be a lot cheaper for me to do it myself I’m good with the soldering iron and flowing and everything just not advanced enough to build a driver yett
Maglite modding may be fun but it can get expensive. LED you linked is cheap but then what about reflector (will existing one be good), switch, heatsink (i.e., how you mount the led), batteries (i.e., will 3 1.5V work, or you need to switch to Li-Ion). Lot of variables.
So, yes it is the past, like 10 years ago. I used Maglites as dive light hosts, even that is no longer worth it.
You can get a decent light for less than Maglite conversion.
You said you on budget but what is a budget, $20? $50.
Tight beam? What use? IMHO tight beam is only good for weapon (and bragging :-)).
Don’t get crazy about particular LED, assuming you need functional light (not for show off) usage should determine the choice.
So
- How you planning to use it?
- Are you after output (lumens) or range (candela)
2a. If lumens, how many?
2b. If candela, what range? - Runtime needed?
You can find drop-in replacements for the bulb for around $8 on eBay. There are numerous US sellers. Example: For MAGLITE Super Bright LED Upgrade Bulb Drop In Replacement 2 3 4 5 6 Cell C/D | eBay. However I am not impressed by the 350 lumen output for these bulbs. That pales in comparison to my $8 el-cheepo XML-T6 flashlight that works on a single 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery. The batteries for the old maglites are expensive. Recently bought four alkaline D-cells for my tankless water heater and they cost me $10. Just doesn’t make sense for me to use a flashlight that takes anything larger than AA or AAA batteries.
