Hey guys probably like a hundred threads already about this subject but none that suited me exactly.
I want to build a tripple or a quad flashlight with drop in parts? So I want to make a s2 style tripple but I’d prefer a bigger body if I could acquire one? What options do I have I’d prefer a single 18650 set up. I don’t own any XPG emitter flashlights so maybe I will try that set up? or if not I’ll just use XPLHI (every second word I write on here is XPLHI) its my favorite emitter. I just don’t know what body to use and reflector system. If I use the XPG is it possible to build a thrower in a tripple style body?
OH seeing as this will be a mantle piece don’t worry about price I am expecting to spend like 80 (60 USD) aussie dollars+.
Most compact / small EDC type lights have a tube diameter around the 1” mark, they’ll also fit onto weapon/picatinny rail mounts.
If you would like a bigger head you could look at P60 style lights (although heat might become an issue if you max out amps), or maybe the EE X6 as a host?
Are you set on using reflectors or could you go with optics? Most triple drop-in solutions I have seen were with optics.
Yea optics would be okay… I was just looking at parts now the x6 sounds like a good one I don’t know much about the p60 but I have seen heaps of parts for them. Its not going to be a EDC or crazy bright I just want to test and see how it builds I have built c8 and x6 and a few zoomies but not a tripple yet. Heaps of people build s2 with tripple they would be running crazy hot.
The most interesting triples I have seen were maglites with custom builds or generally speaking larger lights. You can run them at higher amps, there is more output, better heatsinking opportunities, and overall a great light for the yard, home, car, hobby or work.
you would also have more space inside these larger lights.
P60 has so many parts available and are also affordable, but the heat might become an issue with triples. My P60 drop-ins are driven between 2.5-4.5 amps and that is already too much (1 emitter builds). you could run 3 emitters at 1-1.5 amps each and see how hot that would get….
Thanks mate…yea I have been looking into the p60 tonight so many different versions I would like a bigger head then The p60 but I’ll suss out what is the easiest…
People build the triples in the S-series type of hosts because the optics and PCBs are so conveniently compatible. Building the triple into a P60 would be a lot more involved without no additional benefits. Cooling is worse, and the optics/emitters/drivers will work just the same.
I had wanted to build a P60 triple drop-in, but filling the empty space in the head and having a sealed system to center the optics in the larger-diameter lens opening with zero gains by doing so convinced me otherwise.
So what light do you choose? what emmitters? I think for my first tripple build I don’t want to go to crazy. I am not expecting big lumen maybe like 2000 and id be happy its just some thing different.
I built a triple using the inexpensive triple XP-G2 PCB from KD and a Qlite driver in a Convoy S3 body. (I’d suggest using a different host than the S3 as updated S3s have an integrated shelf instead of a removable pill. Go with an S2/S2+ or S6.) Using the KD non-DTP aluminum board seems to work fine in this non-FET triple. Each emitter is only driven at 1A, but the body still heats up quickly, and it’s an impressive output from such a small light. I actually prefer this triple over my FET XP-L HI triple.
Per Match’s chart here, the XP-G2 he tested is about 350 lumens at 1A, for a total of 1050, far short of your desired 2k lumens. Any higher than that and I’d suggest a Noctigon and a FET driver. At that point, you might as well go all out and run the XP-L HIs for maximum output.
If all you need is a short amount of time in turbo and a floody beam pocket rocket then a Convoy S (?) with a spacer(RMM sells everything you need). If you want a tighter beam then go for an X6 or clone with a spacer and Cute –3SS optic. Depending on max current and how much time in turbo you want you can use either a copper or aluminum spacer from nitro. The best copper mcpcb for this is a 32mm quad Noctogon where you drill through the unused center led pad for the wires.
If you’re willing to wait a little hoop is making some sweet copper pills for triple S2+ builds with the shim integrated rather than separate. Not sure the time frame but I’d expect 1-3 weeks to get it in hand. Also, if nitro is out of X6 shims just post a request, I’m sure someone has one they can part with. Two different sizes, one for use with the stock glass lens and the newer, slightly thicker one for use without it.
Thanks guys for the help. The x6 sounds awesome its some thing a bit different I could always build it out of a stainless steel x6 I bought the blf one but that is staying stock. I’ll look into parts for the x6.
