Tire Pumps 2023

The Project Farm guy is at it again. New tire pump tests.
All the Best,

Although I do like his reviews, they are highly quantitative meaning which one is the fastest, most expensive, loudest, etc.

For example he does not use qualitative measurements like brand recognition or wich one appears to be better made, etc.

For flashlights, I am sure he would pick the brightest one and we all know that would be a poor conclusion.

Ages ago, I got a vacuum/pump combo that works surprisingly well.

Wow, still listed, 'though unavailable.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078YS9VG9/

Has a built-in gauge which is fairly accurate, 'though small, but I still use my trusty GH Meiser gauge to double-check.

And the vacuum part works pretty well, all things considered.

What a lot of reviews don’t take into account, that to pump fast, a) all of it heats up VERY quickly, from the power cord to the pump itself to the air-hose to all the fittings, etc., and b) it starts drawing obscene amounts of current.

As to the latter, while the lighter-socket might be able to handle so many amps, anything else on that circuit has to share, and it’s possible to pop the fuse if too much is on the same line.

I’ll take longevity over speed any day.

This is our tire pump…

It’s cheap and gets the job done. :+1:

Mine: Joe Blow tire pump.

So this looks genuinely cool but please give a write up how it performs. Remember a tire pump should be able to inflate a tire from almost flat. A tire from a sedan or a small SUV like a Rogue. If it does that, you can rest assured it will get you out of a jam.

If the extent of your test was pressing the button to see if it makes noise, you have not really tested it.

Forget about the light and the USB charger it may have. Remember, you bought a tire inflator. At least I think thats what you bought.

We haven’t had a tire that is almost flat, but it inflates tires that are somewhat deflated just fine.
If that’s not good enough for you, there are over 2000 written reviews of this tire pump on Amazon for you to read (if you want.) :+1:

I have a viair under both my trucks for running air tools, pump up tires, and for the suspension in the sonoma.

I have the Dewalt 20v Max DCC020IB. I got it because I already have several 20v Max tools and I like the fact I don’t have to have so many different kinds of batteries. Its been a solid performer for me.

I carry 2 tire pumps in my mini-van because in an emergency I figure 2 shots of one working is worth the small dollars it took to buy them (around $40 each). I’ve used them both and in fact 2 weeks ago I used one to inflate a tire from totally flat to 35lbs without any issues.

But I digress; I saw this pump/sealant kit on Consumers Report and they gave it a good review so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it

In my opinion this brand is good. Metal body and purpose built meaning no phoney add ons like USB chargers etc.

Air compressor + moisture seperator + air pig so tires don’t get filled with hot water.

I’ve been using the Harbor Freight 12v 100 psi one for a long time (the high output one, not the yellow one). Works awesome! All for like $25 on sale. I had two (one stolen with the car).

Is this the one you have?

The Viair compressors are hard to beat for reliability, in my experience.

Yep that’s the one. Price has rwally gone up!

As long as it’s reliable I don’t mind paying $50 for it (includes shipping and taxes). It would be worth every penny and more if I needed to inflate a tire on the road-side. I already keep 2 other pumps in my van but I have reservations about their reliability given how cheaply they seem to be made.

For some of the stuff I do people consider Gast the gold standard. You can run them 24/7 for years before they need service. A little pricy for tires though

Ahhh yes, you get what you pay for. Isn’t it amazing how can you can never get away from those words.

Ah yes. $1,000 starting point is pricey. But when continuous 12 or 24 VDC duty is needed there is not much choice. Similar quality to Oasis. I have had an Oasis compressor on my built up Jeep XJ for 23 years and never had problems. It’s used for the air lockers and airing up group tires of those others who have slow compressors after a group 4x4 run.
