Torx Screwdriver question

hi all, so i bought a used HP elitebook for use to work from home due to the covid 19. Being at least a 6 year old unit i figured i would reapply the thermal compound and clean the fan. came across screws labeled Torx M2.5. all my torx screws are too big and when i search online they only come as T1,T2,T3 ect. which size works with a M2.5 screw? Thanks.

M2.5 is the screw diameter not the torx bit size.

ok. So i just need to buy a set that is specifically for laptops with a torx bit and i should be safe.

^ Yes It’s probably a T-8 Torx size. However, HP is large enough to do a run of whatever they want and it could easily be a T-6 or God knows what. Getting a set of screwdrivers or interchangeable bits is the solution.

Most laptop screws are not very hard to remove.
Sometimes you hit one that’s really tight.
Look fot a torx set that has hardend bits. The really cheap sets usually are not.
Nothing will piss you off quite like a bit that dosn’t quite fit, is soft, and buggers up the screw head…
Be sure to pickup a good #1 phillips also. Most laptops are full of these.

good idea. the smallest torx i have is T10.

you can get a complete set of about 10 different ‘security’ bit types from aliexpress for about $10

wle

m=metric
2.5=length in mm

Wiha has a 50% off sale on its website….

code 50kcelebrate

Wiha is definitely quality.

I dont need the 50pc precision set…. but for $150………

nice tools. over my budget for something i will use once in awhile however.

M2.5 means the diameter is 2.5mm, not length.

I think harbor freight has a set that should be cheap enough for your casual use

Take a look at these from Home Depot:

This has all the sizes you will need for most computers. T4-T15.
The quality is OK and better than many of the zillion bits included sets.
The older versions of this set had better bits.
There are no fancy security heads, just the 8 Torx bits.
Pick up a matching set with the screwdriver heads and you’ll be goo to go for 90% of anything without an Apple logo on it.
All the Best,
Jeff

Hey that is a good price. Sadly, homedepot canada doesn’t seem to carry it. My friendly neighbor lent me this exact set Page Not Found - Aliexpress.com. Although having security bits wouldn’t hurt to have. a lot of the sets on ali look decent for around 15-20. this one has my interest 15.34€ 37% OFF|KINDLOV 112/115/117 in 1 Schraubendreher satz von Schraube Fahrer Bit Set Multi funktion Präzision Handy Reparatur Hand Werkzeug torx Hex|Schraubendreher| - AliExpress

It’s hard to judge the quality of any of those types of sets.
I do see that Amazon.CA seems to have the same thing:
Search for:
115 in 1 Precision Screwdriver Set, Upgrade Version Magnetic Driver Repair Tool Kit

Can’t seem to paste a link to the Amazon page for some reason. Maybe too long for the BLF software.
It’s $27 from Amazon.
At least with Amazon you could ship it back if it turns out to be junk.
All the Best,
Jeff

I bought the iFixit pro tech took kit and very satisfied, it is not cheap (60+ USD) but it has everything you will ever need to open an electronic device.
The bits are good quality and have a lifetime warranty so they replace any damaged bit.
