Triple Aught Design Hard Shell....clone

So all of us gear heads need a place to carry all our lights, knives, phones, and multi tools…right?

I received this jacket earlier in the year and think it’s one of the best values out there.

It’s the Chinese knock off of the highly regarded Triple Aught Design, which can easily run $300 (but worth it).

These usually go on sale during these hot summer months…and for $32.79 shipped represents an insane amount of value imo.

This guy does a pretty good review of it here….I personally went with the coyote tan and may order the black or olive drab next. Not a hunter so the camo doesn’t fit too well in my day to day.

It proved durable and water resistant during my last hammock camping outing.

Pockets everywhere for gear,…lights,…knives,…phones,…keys…“tacticool” patches (Milspec Monkey and US Flag here).

Hmm, but that’s not the one from the review. He links to this one:

Any reason to believe the cheaper one from a different vendor is just as high quality?
EDIT: sorry, didn’t see you already got one. So the one you link to is the one you purchased?

I actually purchased from this store at a cheaper price at the time than they are now offering.

I posted the other store link because it appears on sale and has a decent review rating.

Let me look closer and make sure they are they same models. Thanks

Awesome looking jacket, would like to order one. Great price too…

What color did you get? That Sand looks nice, but it doesnt look like the same color as the guy pictured sitting in the desert with the binos…

esrevenge - yeah,…I got mine in the sand/tan hue and love it.

Be aware, these stores often will take the “liberty” to “borrow” photos of real TAD jackets worn by special forces types in the field.

Pretty much assume any action photos are from the $400 variety. But the close ups seem to be the actual article.

I don’t own a real TAD jacket yet to compare,…but can only say I am super impressed with the faux,…

……and for this price,…it is a no brainer in my experience.

Of course,…it won’t see the light of day here in Texas for another 7 months until it cools down.

I was about to order this jacket a couple of times but the lack of the traditional front pockets always kept me back.
Don’t you miss those pockets?

These jackets look pretty good. Do they run true to size?

Any recommendation for pants to go with the jacket?

I’ll be checking these out. Thanks!

good point,…yeah, the canted front pockets take some getting used to.

I would prefer traditional pocket lay out….but its not a deal killer in my book.

The upper pockets are really handy to hold an ipod and head phones.

I keep a pair of under armour gloves in my back side pockets and don’t even know they are there until I need them.

The inside pockets are pretty standard…hold your pens, phone and/or sunglasses.

One feature I really like is the options for the hoodie…either rolled up tight until it rains…or its pretty cool just hanging out freely as well.

And when it gets really cold , nasty or rainy….you can zip the front side all the way up above your chin…that and along with the hoodie synched down to really keep a good part of your lower face and noggin well protected and warm.

This is the only jacket I own that has a place for velcro patches……just adds a fun cool factor element.

Nemesis……unfortunately, I don’t have any experience and unable to comment on the pants.

Really good point about size….

Many of us heard that Chinese sizes run smaller than their US counter parts.

I wear a true fitted US Medium and ordered a Medium…and it is perfect.

But I think if one is borderline in sizes or tend to wear a lot of under layers,……might consider one size up.

Would also suggest reading the store buyer reviews to see if others are reporting the sizes smaller than US side.

Thanks for the info, fellow Texan. I wear medium also but will read up on the reviews too. Not sure if I even need this since it rarely gets cold enough for me to wear a jacket like this during the winter.

This gear reviewer goes on to do another review…

Just another data point -

And on closer examination it looks like there are different versions/models TAD 4.0,…TAD 5.0,…TAD 6.0 now.

I bought the original 4.0, (maybe why that’s why its half the price of some) of the newer models?

…looks like his review is on the 5.0.

Slightly different fit/finish,…pocket arrangement…but I am no TAD pro, so there maybe other features that justify the higher price on the later models….or they may just be trying to close out the 4.0s….

I think mine, the 4.0 may technically be a soft shell and the 5.0 is a true hard shell and even more water resistant?

I think of the TAD Ranger Fleece as a soft shell, and mine performed pretty well in the rain….but I dunno

Thanks a lot for the mini review! I’m about to push the “buy now” button!

Just an FYI, Rothco/Condor has the same “clone” jacket(known as the Condor Summit and Rothco Special Ops), and if you’re lucky you can find them state side(for those in the US looking) for the same price as some of the Chinese retailers sell them…so you can get them quicker than the slow boat from China. I’m watching one now on Ebay for $45…and have seen them go used worn once for less than that…usually due to someone ordering the wrong size.

Glad to hear that because the link that you bought from had sizing information … I varied from the low side of M to XXXL depending on which measurement you looked at. Nice to hear the sizing is at least close to comparable.

I just saw what was advertised as the 6.0 version for $5 more.

Definitely have to get one in XXL.

oooh, they look nice, but at 190cm and 80kgs I doubt the chinese cut will fit me

Until I see otherwise, that # probably is meaningless unless it ties to quality

It’s probably the 4.0 though.

This seller explains the difference.
