Uisng Circlips as retaining rings

Hey folks i have been using circlips as retaining rings for a while but its not something people talk about much on here, i have a bunch of S2+ that had soldered drivers and didn’t come with retaining rings this seems like a good option. Some builds i make my own copper retaining rings not as good as proper circlips but they have been okay.
Is it common? Do you think its safe?

It would work even better if the light has threads for a retaining ring, this is an Alonefire light the original driver was just press fit in place.

Is it just friction-fit? I’m pretty sure it’d need to squeeze the board into the backstop/ledge/whatever to make sure it’s got a good ground connection.

Interesting idea.

Not knowing how tight the clip is installed, so I would be concerned about it coming loose and causing a short. Agreed threads would help to secure the clip in place.

Have you experienced any connection issues using these clips? The clips exert pressure against the head, but not really onto the driver to help with the negative connection.

You can also get some retaining clips from KD if needed: 18MM (D) X 1.5MM (T) BRASS DRIVER RETAINING RING

Yea its friction fit but the circlip is always pushing out with lots of force so it applies downwards pressure when pushed in tightly.

Mine have been okay so far but if i use them on custom builds they don’t see heaps of use, i have been carrying the Alonefire around and its been okay. You can get different sizes of circlips so you can choose the amount of pressure needed.
I would think if you go to crazy with the circlip size it may damage a aluminum pill as the steel will be harder. Its not clamp with downwards pressure like a retaining ring but if its seated up against the driver tightly it will stay in place as the pressure placed outwards is enough to hold it in place.
I was thinking using steel could cause high resistance but if its seated up on a shelf it should okay.
I will do some testing to see how good it works.
