Unfamiliar with LH351D - please help

Hey guys, I need help choosing an emitter as the LH351D is new to me and I’ve not personally tested any of them.

I’ll be getting the FF E12R and I’m familiar with and quite enjoy two (three) of the options:
SST-20 4000k
XPL-HI 5000K
(I love 219B but already have the ROT66 with those)

I’m not at all familiar with either of the Samsung options:
Sumsung LH351D 5700K W2 CRI80
Sumsung LH351D 4000K CRI90

- I’m not familiar with W2 being used unless it’s in reference to the Osram white flats - is there any correlation?

  • the LH351D 5700K W2 appears to have similar output to the XPL-HI 5000K so I’m wondering what the primary differences are?

I’d like to better understand the LH351D options.

- They don’t appear to have great CRI but is that made up for in good tint and reduced tint shift?

  • what is the beam pattern like? I’m familiar with a balanced SST-20 beam (I only like 4000k and under due to the 5000k horrible green shift at low output) and I like the XPL-HD 5000k beam pattern but dislike the strong loss of CRI compared to the SST-20 high CRI options

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

> dislike the strong loss of CRI

agree,

I like LEDs with 90+ CRI

my favorite is 219b 4500k

I think W2 or whatever are brightness bin (chromaticity bins typically use the first letters of the alphabet), the meaning is specific to each manufacturer, but in general the letter will mean a group and the number a subgroup within that group, higher letters and values typically better. You need to check each LED datasheet to convert it to lumens at the specific binning current.

There is a tradeoff between CRI and brightness so you won’t find High CRI emitters on high brightness bins. Also more green will increase the output, so beware of the tint when the bin is high.

You can find the chromaticity within the full LED code if the vendor makes it public.

My experience comparing XPL HI to LH351D:

XPL HI:

  • excellent tint with usually the least amount of green at all brightness settings.
  • excellent output
  • high intensity: produces a small, intense hotspot
  • low-CRI (typically 70 for 4000K and up, or 80 for 3000K). Colors don’t “pop” as much with XPL HI due to this. What you’re looking at may look a bit more washed out.

LH351D:

  • available in high-CRI (up to 90)
  • slightly greenish tint, especially at lower power. Not as bad as SST-20, but definitely more green than 3D or 5D XPL HI. Every LH351D I’ve seen is slightly greenish. Even the dog farts ones. I would say tint is noticeably worse than XPL HI.
  • similar lumens to XPL HI, but not as intense. The hotspot is broader than XPL HI, but does not throw as far.

Overall:

  • If you want the most efficient light for lighting things up, XPL HI is probably better. Due to the higher intensity you do not need as much power to get the same amount of lumens on the target.
  • If you want to wow your friends, XPL HI looks more impressive as it punches more.
  • If you want the best color rendition you want High CRI. For this, LH351D is much better than XPL HI.

I would say the new Wurkkos/Sofirn 5000K LH351D 90CRI are excellent and I don’t see any green.

The offerings from fireflies don’t look appealing to me.

The 90+ Ra/CRI LH351Ds have lower R9 than 95+ Ra/CRI SST-20s, 219Bs, etc. but this isn’t super apparent in real world use.

I like them stock when the tint bin is decent, I really like them with a dome sliced down to roughly half height or less.

XPL HI is my favorite LED when output is the priority. I usually use a 3A or 3D in throwers and 5A when warmer is wanted.

219B is my favorite LED when tint and color are the priority.

LH351D sliced to ~1mm is my all around favorite. Good output AND tint! Look around BLF for information on slicing.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful insight! That definitely answered a lot of my questions regarding these LEDs

Considering the large amount of output monsters I already own, I’ve decided to go with my CRI favorites: 219B or 4000K SST-20

I can’t really pass up an opportunity to get another light with the super rare 219Bs
