With budget lasers, you never know what you are going to get. It’s random luck. Unless you buy from a known good chinese laser seller.
Do you have safety glasses? You really need them when trying to burn things. Actually any indoor use of higher power lasers. Even if you just don’t want to spend much on glasses, there is still a decent option. Uvex SCT-orange glasses, only $7 and they tested out good by a couple members on LPF.
Robertkoa, you mentioned the Galileo, I presume you mean from laserglow? Galileo | 532 nm Green Laser Pointer | Laserglow Was there something you didn’t like about it? Because laserglow has been around for many years, always well known on LPF (laser pointer forum). And a good company from what I recall (I’m not active on LPF anymore). Whereas I haven’t heard of Z-bolt before.
Actually, none of those lasers are 5mW. The real power is actually way higher but due to regulations it’s a lot easier for them to sell and ship 5mW lasers, so since a couple years ago, most Chinese dealers only lists them as 5mW. High powered lasers need to comply with some technical and safety requirements.
The 301 laser I got is close to 50mW, and probably the earlier “fire starter” versions were even higher.
That’s true for random cheap chinese sellers. But some of the better laser sellers do have real 5mW lasers. There is some small demand for true 5mW since that is a safe level. Not that you can just point it right into your eye and stare at it. But for accidental hits, 5mW power combined with the speed of your blink reflex results in no damage. Laserglow is one I would trust if you want true 5mW. Check out their yellow 593.5nm and 589nm, these are hard wavelengths to create, hence the high prices for not much mW. $690 for 2.0-4.9mW. I think I’ve heard that they are actually manufactured by CNI, chinese based but high quality and makes really high end stuff.
Yes.
It would be cool to have a few different Colors like in 5 milliwatt with a secret 10 milliwatt Mode or higher for the Power Laser Guys who like to cut Camaros in half etc.
There is a new 488nm diode and I imagine there are other colors that are going to be much cheaper…

I’m afraid I don’t currently have a laser power meter. There were a couple other BLF members that would likely have one but unfortunately they don’t seem active anymore. You could try posting a thread with a title something like “Anyone have a laser power meter in the usa?”. Or you could try over at Laserpointerforums.
I started not to post that because the focus here seems to be on much lower powered class lasers. This picture shows the little barn at 610 yds getting hit hard! 3300mA 9mm Nichia.
Doesn’t bother my eyes, absolutely love that aura impact!
570 yds to the tree line
Threatening to explode the oil drum at 97 yds.
A friend came over from town one night and wanted to see how far he could head going home and make out the beam. If I pointed it vertically he lost it pretty quick, the thin blue line is difficult to locate from even a few hundred yards. But if I aimed it low, shot over his head, he said it was pretty much like these pictures even towards 2 miles out. (by that time I’m sure my cell was losing power as well, I use an LG 4.35V 18650 oops, my bad, that’s in my 3600mA Nichia UV light, sorry.)
Well, there’s only a few of those in the nearest mile, but quite a number of cattle, bunnies, coyotes, foxes, skunks. The bunnies are hilarious, my big lights are so bright the bunnies freak out and hop about 3-4 feet straight up then look around like they think the sky is falling or something. Cracks me up every time! (had one do that just a few minutes ago)
 I had a feeling. That does make it easier.
Bunnies, how do they know the sky isn’t about to fall? Plus being a vulnerable tasty snack has just got to make you jumpy.
Poor bunnies, but laughter is good for you.
