I have realised I have a few old mini-maglites (AAA and AA sized, I think) lying around - are there effective upgrade routed for these to make them good led lights?
Tons more threads on AA mag builds around here.
No real effective upgrades that do not require modding. Nothing off the shelf that really makes them much better or much brighter. TerraLUX and Nite Ize do offer kits.
I got some of the Terralux upgrades years ago and feel like I threw good money after bad. There are much better budget lights for the same price as the upgrades.
there were 2xAA mini maglites going for 8 bucks a pop, not even on sale, all night long at WALmart a ways back…
basically a oddball drill bit size (23/64ths???) and a drill press, then you can plop a p60 module down in it… whatever you can pack into a p60 module, the AA maglite incan can then DO… which could be decent.
anyways, THAT 2xAA mini maglite thread? the one with the drill bit? THAT was the easy one i liked. I even found that drill bit size eventually, lol…
i remember looking at that mod and wondering if i had a bit that size…First one i pulled from the toolbox was the right one ….go figure

but it was worth it
There are 15 mm 1-2AA boost drivers that you can use and even some 13 mm ones but in either case you need to make up some kind of pill and possibly or even likely have to mod the light for them to fit. A fun project. The terralux modules are a direct swap but to my mind are worth maybe half what they sell for unless maybe for the lamp/tail switch kit.
don’t waste time or money on the led “bulb” replacement for the D mag… I bought one about 5 yrs ago—-before I was enlightened —absolutely no heatsinking and the led eventually wouldn’t work…. you could search for “h22 heatsink” so you trim reflector, install driver mount led board and that’s pretty much it… also there’s malkoff
