USB 2.0 motherboard plugs from old case

I assembled a computer for a friend of a friend who says his case is 14 years old case and the usb2 connector for the front is a different connector then the motherboard has (one row old one vs two row on the new motherboard). I asked at a major computer parts store if there is an adapter available but was told there is no such thing and its a lost cause (the guy was pretty standoffish and didn’t seem to care so i’m not sure if i believe him). We bought a USB3 card reader (it has one USB3 wire and a card reader USB2 wire) and i noticed its USB2 cable looks a lot like the old one except only 4 wires are used vs 5 on the old case USB port wires. I’ve attached photos of the old and new ones, even the wire colours are identical, can i connect it to the motherboard as is, and what is the purpose of the fifth wire?
TIA

Old case connector

New card reader connector, its hard to see the 4th black wire and the fact it is a double row connector

The ground/neutral wire is part of the housing (common ground)…the colors are the same (vcc) D and D- are present…worse comes to worse…splice it in

I think those are also classified as standard “female header socket” connectors

What WarHawk said, I think shield actually covers the female USB socket and the ground is one of the USB’s pins.
