I assume it’d work just wouldnt be as much 365nm to work with so wouldn’t be as bright, and a little extra slightly >365nm would make it through.
I put a ZWB2 filter in front of some white led once, I can’t remember what it was, whatever was in the s2+ closest to me at the time. Probably a 519a. Wanted to see if it’d let a tiny bit of a higher wavelength through or if the 519a was emitting any 365nm.
Nuthin. Couldn’t even tell if the flashlight was on or off.
The graph is from this paper. Blue lines are excitation spectra with the corresponding fluorescence spectra shown as red lines.
For protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) - the glowing stuff in eggs:
It looks like only if the wavelength of the triggering UV light is in the vicinity of 400 nm (c), the resulting fluorescence emits in the easy-to-notice red band.
The PPIX illuminated by a 365 nm UV LED (b) also glows, but emitting at around 450 nm (violet/blue). The color of the emitted light may overlap with the visible unfiltered ‘shoulder’ of the incoming UV light, thus masking the visual fluorescence effect.
That’s right I forgot it lets through IR. I couldn’t see anything at all with whatever led I used.
I want to try it in front of a bunch of different stuff now. Curious to see what happens with a w2 blue or those 8000k sanan’s, or my 10,000K round 9090, or an sst20 deep red.
But I’d have to take the zwb2 out of a light first and I don’t really want to do that right now… Might just buy a spare
I can’t testify to the performance claims, especially since the page won’t load for me right now, but this seems to be what you’re looking for:
Oh, and (IMNERHO) it’s spectacular to look at!! The body, of course. It does also have the UV filter you’re looking for.
I bought two, and gave one to a friend who is working with his daughter making UV-hardened art. It works a treat for that!! Fun times looking for glowing things around the house, but the promises, like spotting urine or snot from coughing (sorry) just don’t happen at this wavelength. Bugs in the yard are another story!!
To your purpose, when I was a spark, I was also a “rockhound”… I’ll spare you that “Long story”… Anyway, one of the people I encountered on a regular basis doing that, had a “Rock Store” where they sold tools, specimens, mounts, etc. They had made a plywood box with a viewing hole like the old Nickelodeon machines. There were 3 pushbuttons beside the viewport, one locking, two momentary. The locking one worked a white floodlight, one of the others worked a UV bulb of a certain frequency, the other, another frequency… They had made a display inside the box with steps & platforms covered in mohair, on which they glued various gem and mineral specimens.
It should be easy to make. A plywood cube ~3’ to a side, with a bevel on one top corner having a viewport and some buttons on it. You could use an old, black SCUBA mask for the viewport…
I have had cataract surgery and can see the light from the filtered Sofern SF16-UV light even with 80 year old eyes. Quite faint direct from the filtered UV LED at a very quick glance but definitely visible. White bond paper fluoresces strongly as does the luminous paint on watch dials.
The curve is a log curve. The shorter the wavelenght the brighter it needs to be to be seen. The outer buld of an HID light is an ultraviolet filter. I can see the UV light when the outer bulb is broken. There are actually several bands that can be seen when it is difracted through glass eyeglasses. It looks blue and if you come across one get away from it. I found one in Nashville and to my surprise it was removed quickly after I reported it to the police.
