Howdy, all,
I’m just tired of looking at these incredibly expensive yet uselessly dim Fenix L1T flashlights collecting dust in a drawer and would like to upgrade the LED. They were never really “worth” what I paid for them, so I doubt I could stand to sell them. Sux to B Me, I know…
I (sorta) like the UI, so I don’t mind using the existing driver IFF the High-Low twist can be maintained.
I know the “State-Of-The-Art” when these were new is a miserably dim distant memory now, so no need to leap to defend Fenix’s honor. It’s just that each of these cost more than the total of all the lights I’ve EDC’d since them. Not “Budget” by any estimation.
No need to recommend an emitter. They’re all too dim and that’s the last thing I need. After much consideration and experimentation, I really don’t want an XM-L, with its weird colors, although I’d love to get the output of an XM-L but in the original reflector and have all one color OTF. To me, within my reach now, that means XP-G2. They’ll handle the Vf and (reported) ~.7A the Fenix will feed them, so that’s sorted.
What gets me stuck is that pill. I get that the key to the UI is, there are essentially 2 paths to Ground. There are 3 wires, obviously for implementing the twist-dim feature.
And the LED is the old style in a plastic “boot”, not a heatsink. I can find the plastic-boot LEDs still being sold, but I can’t trust their exaggerated output claims; and I really want Maximum Output so I don’t have to keep making excuses for the upside-down Cost-Benefit Analysis on these … things.
Questions:
So has anyone here installed an XP-G in a Fenix L1T? Did you need to un-flow the LED from the board it came on (and then what)? A 16mm heatsink fits the socket in the pill, but would a 12mm or 14mm disc still mount & leave room for the Green wire? Or did you have to make a hole for it? Did you keep the flappy disc that the wires and LED are soldered to? Did you take pictures?? I’m sure I’ve forgotten to include some important questions…
Thank you in advance for any experience(s) or knowledge of modding a Fenix L1T you’d care to share. Fenix should thank you too, because you’ll be helping get these back in the public eye.
