@sb56637 I don’t know if there is a fix for this but I’ve noticed a quirk. A watched thread will forever show up as “unread” if someone you have blocked posts there. I guess that the site detects you haven’t read the hidden post and treats it as though you haven’t scrolled to the end of the thread.
The workaround is to unwatch and then rewatch the thread currently.

I’ve thought about ignoring some users, but I would rather see (potentially) objectionable posts. 
I’ve only blocked two people on this site and they don’t post anything useful.
Steam Forums, on the other hand, I probably have 2 dozen people blocked. There are full-time trolls on there who spend all day making intentionally controversial posts solely to get reactions. Until recently they were known as “jester farmers” since you could get Steam Points by receiving comment awards and people would award you jester stickers to people for saying stupid stuff. Thankfully that system has been toned way down*. Hasn’t stopped the trolls from trolling though.
(*) The awards you can give posts on Steam Forums are now strictly cosmetic rewards. Before they acted as a tipping system complete with different awards being worth more or less like denominations of money. Also, the Jester award was removed completely.

But I thought that some other comments might be read by me as “out of context” without knowing everything that was said in a thread. And I don’t always log in to read sometimes so I’m still going to see them.
And even a broken clock is right twice a day. Or at least once if you’re on a 24-hour clock.
It turns out that some that I considered blocking are actually the same person.
I’ve said too much.
In some online communities, if someone gets banned, their IP address gets banned as well.
That’s not how it works on BLF.
The banned person usually just creates a new account, frequently with the same IP address.
Of course, the workaround for having your IP address banned is to use a VPN or to use the Tor browser.
I am not a BLF moderator or administrator, but I do know a little about how BLF works. 
You can’t block by IP as the IP changes at least once a day for most users (or a lot more frequent for mobile users).

Still, some communities do block IP addresses of people that get banned.
I don’t know how effective it is, though.

The communities that I know of are quite small, so they might ban IP address ranges instead of just single IP addresses.

Regarding the initial observation, yes, there is an intentional design decision in the stock forum engine where it doesn’t completely hide some elements of a user’s activity that you have ignored (blocked). I have applied some custom code to make it hide as much as possible, but there currently doesn’t seem to be a way to make it not indicate new posts in a watched thread if the only unread posts are from a user you have have ignored.
Thanks for the tip. If I’m not mistaken I believe this would only be necessary if the most recent posts in the watched thread are from the ignored user and there are no subsequent posts from other users.
Also it should be noted that in the above-mentioned case, your watched threads will still be marked as having new activity on the homepage and in the category-filtered listings.
Sort of. I can block a user’s current IP, but there are obviously ways of intentionally obtaining a new IP to circumvent the block, or at the very least most users have a dynamic IP address that changes every few days. So it’s kind of pointless to block IPs for misbehaving user moderation purposes, i.e. to ban habitually rude users or determined trolls. I usually only block IPs that are slamming the server with requests that in some way cause performance problems, which are almost always bots and not actual users.
