Pretty strange, for sure! To be fair, the Grammy was for “Best Hard Rock/Metal…” and the album did contain a few good rockers, including this one.
Sounds a lot like Dire Straits.
Especially the singing, but also a little of Martin Barre’s guitar work.
During Tull’s 1984 tour, Ian Anderson powered through a lingering throat infection that plagued him throughout the tour. That turned out to be a mistake. He should have cancelled the concerts, and taken time to heal. Unfortunately, he suffered permanent damage to his vocal cords, and had to have throat surgery to repair them. As a result, he could no longer sing with the power of his earlier voice, and had to develop a new style, a style that is similar to the half-talking/half-singing approach used by Mark Knofler.
Ian’s illness and recovery is also the reason Jethro Tull took a three year hiatus following the 1984 tour. Prior to that, Tull had released a new studio album almost every year, beginning in 1968. The only exceptions were 1981 and 1983.
That’s similar to what happened to Klaus Meine from The Scorpions, too.
He had “nodules” on his vocal chords and tried pushing himself to the point of permanent damage, but after surgery somehow recovered enough to be able to sing again, in studio as well as in concerts.
Ages ago, don’t recall details, but pretty close.
Just can’t get enough of this new album and this
song is next to last on disc and may be my Fav, but they all are good. Amazing a band can get this old and still pull the rabbit out of the hat.
Enjoy!
