Thought I’d throw this info out about a new knife design that’s up on Kickstarter and although not a “budget” knife, it is significantly discounted from what the retail price will be. It’s definitely not for everyone with a 1” blade but for light use users could be an interesting EDC choice.
It is 100% made in the USA in Garland, Texas and has a unique patent pending Bolt Lock (see the video on Kickstarter)
Normally I avoid Kickstarter products because I’ve ended up with some junk in the past but this is his 12th Kickstarter campaign and his previous products have been well received.
A few notes:
Replacement blades will be available for $20-25 and possibly in other steels than D2 if the campaign does “really well” and with $50k+ raised the first day it may hit “really well” status.
There will also be a version coming out that uses hobby style and surgical disposable blades.
I have no affiliation with this product but thought I’d share if anyone is interested earlybird pricing is in effect for the next 20 hours as of this post.
Of course, but as someone who’s wife has had her work knocked off by various corporations (from small companies to Target) I don’t support stealing of other people’s work, especially when its the work of an individual or small company. Not only can it take months or years of design and prototyping that needs to be factored into the cost, cheap poorly made copies using inferior materials tarnish the original designer’s work making their new work more difficult to sell. Fortunately my wife is very talented and with the ability to speed up the design process using CAD and SLA 3d printing is now able to already have new products released before the knockoffs hit the market, but for years it had a significant negative effect on her business.
I have no problem with original designs produced in China in fact many of the knives currently are excellent quality AND more expensive than a lot of knives made around the world.
I am not a fan of any company copying someones work and trying to pass it on as the real deal genuine original. I am on the fence when it comes to clones. If they are being sold and advertised as a clone then I can see a benefit of being able to own a design that I may not be able to afford otherwise. I am willing to sacrifice even a bit of quality for a design where the original will forever be out of my budget. At the same time I hate to see others hard work copied and taken advantage of. It’s a slippery slope. I only own a few clones that I know of. I am not a walking bible of every known design and brand. So some knives I have may be copies and I don’t even know they are.
Two of my favorite knives. Affordable and well made as far as I can tell. Though I admit to carry my medium sized Honeybadger most of the time.
Sorry didn’t mean to take the thread off topic. However as I have been personally effected by knockoff products both in the example I gave above and other instances that I won’t go into as I think my point was made. So when the first comment after I posted about an original knife that I had just watched they designer’s story about the pride he takes in his work was “Good idea for a knife. But the chinese will be selling clones in a few months for much cheaper.” I felt like the point of my post was missed.
Back on topic…
I worked out a trade and this Shirogorov AND one other knife (will be picking it up this weekend) are now mine. So here’s my pocket dump for today.
I carry a little SOG Micro2 on my keyring, on 3rd so far.
In pocket, WAS always a Puma, usually the Prince when out shooting.
with a Martiini on belt. Second Prince same Martiini.
Nowadays. I buy and carry ANY knife I like the look and feel of.
regardless of it’s name stamped on there.
At present a Y-Start with D2 blade or a Firebird F753M. 440c blade.
Either do a good job and my $30 in ’84. ($360 nowadays) Puma,
sits on shelf at home.
Plus. They both better to use than the Traditional Puma blade style
Clip point.
I find certain models of the good quality “clones”, are as good as.
and even better than some of the full priced Names items.
Why pay $200 to $800 and more, for a beautiful looking thing you daren’t carry round in your pocket. OR use.
In case you scratch it.
When the good quality Chinese clones do All jobs well. and if it scratches.
So what.
They a perfect match. Use Clone. look at custom. Best of both worlds.
When you go back 50/60/70 yrs, We are soooo lucky nowadays.
Fark the “good old days”.
They were pretty hard. believe me.
Excellent. I don’t know what you traded but whatever it was I think you got a great knife. One of my favorites from the ones I have seen from you so far.
Because it’s a stolen design. There are tons of affordable options out there that aren’t stolen.
I do wish more makers would team up with knife companies to bring their designs to market at lower price points. This could stop the clones, and put some money in their pocket for their designs.
There will ALWAYS be “copies” on just about all things.
the ways of the human being.
Same as there will ALWAYS be buyers of such.
The better quality versions and the cheaper ones.
People like myself. IE Old farts and on Pension.
NO more financial income as such.
Can.This way. Appreciate the finer things in life.
At OUR price ranges.
The market covers itself from both ends.
and as long as such are identified as Clones/Copies.
It’s NOT really such a bad thing Really.
There’ll always be both ends of any market.
Just appreciate the level you at I reckon.
I used to have Winchester 101 Pigeon Grade O/U. and Rem 870 shottie’s
with multiple custom Rifles.
Nowadays. A BRNO .22 bolt. Still does the job. Just.
There ARE some very well made knives around under $30.
A fair few people use them for working with.
While keeping the “named” ones in a box???
So they wouldn’t scratch it or wear blade out.
Could never understand that myself.
I used to use my Pigeon Grade for bunny shooting. (and foxes)
Just to use it. Also the 30-06.
You can hit running rabbits/Hares. You can hit any moving target.
The guy driving the car goes to jail with the bank robber.
The buyer of the stolen design is complacent to the crime. The designer has a retirement plan to ya know… if one does not set themselves up to afford the finer things in life then the appreciation thereof is simply unobtainable. It is what it is.
Wow, after reading all of these moralising whinning & preaching it feels like being on Bladeforums and that’s not a compliment!
What will the next step be? Not being allowed to say any negatives about the products of the paying sponsors of the forum?
Anyway back to the topic, I’m EDCing this Ganzo G729 on this pleasent Sunday afternoon just because it makes me glad!
Might as well throw my 2 cents in concerning copies, clones, fakes, & such.
’My standards’ for purchasing Chinese Knives: . (ymmv)
1. If a Chinese company falsely uses the name or trademark of another company on their knife, box, &/or paperwork it is a complete fake & thievery.
Not a “clone” or “copy”… just a fake.
Personally I would never knowingly buy one of these.
2. A 100% exact copy of a known design, but not using the Original Companies name.
I personally am not going to knowingly buy one of these either. But, that being said…. I am fairly familiar with all things Benchmade so recognizing a BM copy is not gonna be a huge problem. However, I am not that familiar with most other folders by different companies. And I am not going to do massive research to try & determine if something I like may be a copy.
3. Knives ‘inspired’ by other designs but not copies.
I have no problem buying any of these. If you get right down to it most knives are inspired in some way by other knives.
4. Original designs.
I feel the same as rcwiily , I have no problem buying them at all.
You need to get the Genuine. Original. VERSION of THIS GoComma!!
The fit n’ finish of this knife is comparable to ANY knife I own, and I own more than a few!
The only thing lacking on this knife is the pocket clip. It is a bit wonky but with a couple of strategically placed bends it works pretty good.
It is advertised as D2 steel. I have not verified that, but I have verified it has great edge holding properties. It is hollow ground blade.
In different sales I have paid from $8.99 to $10.99 for this knife. They were $9.26 yesterday & were $11.99 when I just checked.
Yeah… to any doubters, I know full well it is a Chinese knife & that it sells for super cheap. But that does not change what I have written about it. It is the best deal on a decent knife I have ever run across.
…
And if you want a good light duty ‘gentlemens knife’, THIS NO-NAME seems to be a “Genuine. Original. VERSION” also.
.
Fit n’ finish is excellent. Blade is San Mai damascus. A very neat little pocket knife. Highly recommended too… by me.
