What budget 18650 headlamps does everyone recommend?

The best way to figure out how my headlamp is perceived by others is wearing a headlamp in the mirror.

Perfect moment to buy a Sofirn hs21, there’s a 25% discount now on all products because of 15th anniversary

I have a 25DL, it’s one of a few headlights I have and always the one I grab for real world use, under the car, in a dark garage etc.

I really like the highly versatile Sofirn HS21 with its twisty head for spot/flood/red, but it doesn’t get picked up and used as a hand torch to take the dog out or whatever. It’s quite new, maybe it’ll find its place on outdoor overnighters in the van or tent.

I find/found the HS21 to be a real pain to twist the lamp down in the mount. Sofirn have cut the grooves really deep. I ended up filing down the plastic nub on the backplate, for my use there’s enough friction just from the clip.

This is definitely a problem with larger and heavier head torches, they need holding still if used for running or mountain biking.

Could go down even further and still have enough hold.

How does the 25DL do in the ‘no-blinding other campers’ department?

I also found turning the lamp up and down in the bracket being pretty stiff. At one point the movement became smooth - that was when the bracket cracked :-). Luckily the brackets are easily found on line.

The D25L is excellent for tasks like that.

Edit: Mine is one of the earlier versions in which the onboard charging is basically useless- as the charging current is ridiculously low. The latest models have better charging. They may have renamed it H25L too, both names are mentioned in this listing? https://www.sofirnlight.com/products/d25l-rechargeable-headlamp-with-dual-lh351d-led?

It does a lot better, one handed twist down. This is a side by side pic, you can see the HS21 is built not to move while carrying that extra weight, but Sofirn really over did it.

I just have done what you did, except I filed the nub a bit more (by accident) to the point that there is no audible click anymore when you turn the light up and down. It’s still stiff enough to hold and easy to turn with one hand.

I’m going to do that. It’s got to be a one handed adjustment.
