Hey guys as a keen fisherman my self…I am wondering what gear every one has seeing this website is worldwide.
I own a few Shimano rod and reels.
Also i own a Shakespeare rod and reel combo
jarvis walker rod with a Shimano reel i snapped my rod when i was away so i bought a cheapo rod and kept the reel.
I love the new Shamino system with the fully sealed bearing it look like the reel is one piece.
All my fishing is saltwater seeing as live about 1km away from the ocean. I do go lake fishing but that is saltwater also.
I am looking at buying to 10-12 foot rod for rock/beach fishing any recommendations? I am leaning towards a Diawa combo…
On my list to do would be fly fishing in Canada and i would also love to try ice fishing.
If you ever visit Australia try your hand at marlin fishing its an adventure.
Those Shakespeare rods are made ~13mi from where I’m sitting right now.
THANK YOU for supporting our local economy! Those “Ugly Sticks” are very hard to break! And yet they still give excellent “feel”…
As for me, I can’t carry all my rods at one time. I don’t use them all at one time, of course (!!!) but there are rods for Trout and rods for Tuna, and a lot in between.
The most interesting fishing I can recall was catching native Trout in North Carolina USA with a hand line & bugs I caught on the bank. The most fun was any fish I ever caught on a fly rod — especially really big Largemouth Bass and Striped Bass.
Sorry, I know that doesn’t help, but I don’t do much beach fishing…
do you fish on rivers and lakes? Ive been fly fishing here but overseas it looks better.
i don’t mind the ugly sticks but some of the Shakespeare reels i have used are a bit dodgy but i have never used top of line gear they don’t seem to sell it here.
My biggest “fish winches” (not “fish wenches”! we’re only allowed one of those!) have Penn reels, but for the lakes & rivers stuff, Daiwa and Shimano please me well, as do the odd Abu Garcia & even Zebco I’ve picked up over the years.
The hardest part for me is finding what they call “Left-Handed” baitcasters! I’m “Right Handed”, which means I cast with my Right Hand (for power & control) and can perfectly-well crank the handle with my Left Hand while my strong hand does the pulling. I got so tired of switching hands & occasionally missing fish (when The Feed is on, that hand-switch will cost you fish!) because of it, I gave all my “normal” reels to my “Left Handed” fishing buddy & now only buy “Left Handed”… no, wait… That’s “Right Handed”… Or is it “Left”…
I just can’t make sense of it. I’ll stick with spinning reels!
Most of my rods are cheapies. A couple of shimano combos and a Jarvis Walker combo.
One of the shimanos I have had since I was a kid and has been great, but I am really unhappy with the Jarvis walker reel, the gears were made of the worst quality metal I have ever seen, plastic gears would have been stronger.
Use to be addicted to fishing, have bunches of freshwater gear but only three saltwater rigs until last year. Decided I was going to do more saltwater fishing and buy some quality gear. Bought a few rigs, one from a doctor getting out of fishing, big mistake. Ended up buying 9K from this one man, all new gear at a discount off new prices. Rods are Calstar Grafighter, Shimano Terez, Shimano Trevala, and some singles of others. Reels are Shimano Torsa, Trinidad, Tiagra, Stella, Saragosa, and an Everol 14/0 plus a couple of others. Think I’m going to get rid of about a third of it if anyone is interested. International shipping would kill the deal.
UglyStik rods are good but for indestructibility you can’t beat a 1920s True Temper steel rod. Mounted in a featherweight chuck type spinning rod handle and a good set of guides, sturdy reel, and 60 lb spiderwire braided line you have a rod that could land a submerged tire.
Shouts quality! lol it works fine i use it a $50 rod so if it gets broken cause i do some thing dumb i wont cry its fiberglass rod so its fairly strong the reel would probably break first lol. I am so use to using graphite rods now its weird using a fiberglass one.
I have learn about maintenance every time i fish i wash them down and oil them again so far its working!
LOL yea when kmart sold fishing gear i bought a few jarviswalker then. i was looking at jarvis walker beach rod from BCF i might just spend a bit more….i think the rods are okay but yea the reels are dodgy and now days you can get a Shimano for the same price. Ebay is having 20% at BCF so i am looking now.
Haha, kmart is where my broken Jarvis walker came from.
I have heard a similar thing about rods and reels, an entry level rod should be reliable but likely won’t feel that good, but an entry level reel will likely be low quality and not last long.
Tournament Choice, from Academy… :money_mouth_face: (BFF? Budget Fishing Forum?)
I have several of the Tournament Choice, a couple of BPS-brand baitcasters, and a Daiwa Procaster baitcaster.
I have a couple of Berkley Big Game rods I use for surf fishing. One with a $35 Shakespeare Tidewater reel, and the other with a Cabela’s King Kat II spinning reel, and a nice Ugly Stik with a Quantum spinner.
Also have a compact Emmrod reel for my travel kit.
I haven’t been for quite a while now, but mainly used to fish in the south east of Port Phillip Bay. When I was a kid my dad had a boat, but in the last few years it’s mainly been from piers and only occasionally from boat off of the Mornington area. When I was studying we used to do a fair bit of spinning for trout at a nearby lake, especially around exam time.
I dislike going to Phillip Island around holidays, we went just after Christmas and it took over an hour to travel that last 5 or 10km and get onto the island. Other times of the year it’s nice, I don’t think I have been fishing there though.
Although I dont fish anymore, I have about 60 fishing rods.
Like flashlights, I used to make custom fishing rods. I had a rod for every kind of fish, or lure or reel. Fiberglas, graphite etc.
