I know I can hear it now, move to Florida, we don’t have any snow around here, etc. etc. Well we have some here and while cleaning off the driveway it occurred to me that some people around here might have some interesting ideas about lighting the snowblower. My wife got me one of these ,
which although crap for light is actually pretty useful for snowblowing. I can always just get an add on light since I have electric start, but there must be some inventive solutions from this group.
I do too, and my model does not have a stator in it, so I can’t tap into the 12v source and mount a automotive light.
I have been thinking about getting a bike light with 18650 pack to mount, but no clue which are with a darn.
Blf members should make a blf bike light so I know it’s good lol
I took your idea and put (one of) my bike lights onto my snowblower.
This here is the Thorfire BL30,
This light has two Cree XM-L2 and the generic 4 cell shrink wrapped battery pack.
The advertised lumen specs are low 85, Mid 350, High 800 and Turbo 1400.
There is step down from Turbo to high at 3 1/2 minutes runtime. I cannot attest to the advertised 2 hour 15 minute Turbo runtime when it steps down, and I then have to cycle trough the modes to get back to Turbo.
My Craftsman Snowblower now equipped for night time and pre-dawn snow removal!.
I used 1 inch schedule 40 pvc
Two plugs attached with nuts and bolts
The light has a four 18650 cell battery pack, the pack is only shrink wrapped (not moisture resistant) so I will have to wrap it in plastic to seal out moisture.
This lights up my whole driveway, I will probably continue to use a headlamp to soften those shadows. All I need now is a snowstorm…
I look at them a few times a month, but can never bring myself to order one… THIS ONE keeps catching my eye, but at this point I wont get it til lawn mowing season…
Awesome work on the retro fit. Luckily my snowblower has a bar below the controls so it will be an easy install, once I get around to getting one.
Problem is the old saying “you get what you pay for” is not always valid in the flashlight world… but it is… you can easily get a $20 light that is better than a lot of lights in the $50 range, but you can also get a $50 light that is absolute trash…
My snowblower came with a headlight, so nothing to do there.
Here is a shot of my riding lawnmower though. 2 build threads that are now useless because of Photobucket. On top are 4 MR16 bulbs each containing 8 Nichia 119’s in warm white.
Tucked underneath are 4 UltraFire 502B heads, each with a cool white XM-L
I estimate the setup at about 8000 lumen and the combination of warm and cool white emitters gives nice color rendition.
This has been running for better than 4 years now without a problem.
No snowblower, but last year when we had Snowmageddon (or was it Snowzilla? forgot…) and a big-ass drift that solidified into ice blocked the rear door (opens out), I had to sliiiiiiide down the alley on the snow-turned-ice and then climb up the rear-stairs (chiselling out what I needed to make steps from the solid ice) and up onto the patio.
Nfw could I use an ice-chopper one-handy and hold a light with the other, so I just donned my RJ02 and had at it. Even on its lowest setting, it was plenty bright reflecting off white ice-covered snow.
Now that’s what I’m talking about. Some great ideas guys. Dchomak how is yours powered? I think the headlamps are winning. You can see that there are shadows when the light is mounted on the snowblower so having the light higher makes a difference.
These lights hang low to the turf and hit the grass at a glancing angle. Really shows what’s cut and what’s not.
And to answer another question. The mower is battery start, 12v, and has a charging system
I need to update the build threads and link the posted pictures to Imgur. As they are now they are hosted by photobucket.
There are Addon’s to both Chrome and FireFox that gives a work around so that pictures hosted PhotoBucket display in the threads
