I know there’s a list of white sbt 90.2 flashlights, but which ones are available in red?
Also, is it possible to mod a 90.2 red into a 90.2 white light? If so, which would make the best jacket-pocket carryable or smaller host to use for an sbt 90.2 red project?
I realize that sbt 90.2’s do not usually conform to edc-sized hosts, so some sacrifices might need to be made, so larger host suggestions are fine.
I haven’t looked, but I don’t recall seeing anything for sale with the red yet…maybe Hank?
The red is remarkably robust, approaching what we usually see with most high power white emitters, but it still suffers more from heat similar to UV emitters (not nearly as much, though). Should be able to just swap emitters and use the same driver and no concern with current until maybe 15A or so. Data sheet says 13.5A but Djozz’s test shows it keeps going strong. However…heat buildup/junction temperature is important still and has lower maximums before steady derating and change in wavelength, so a host with good heat sinking and also smart operation of the light will be best for the color and longevity of the emitter. If you want to run it high current for longer periods or frequently this would rule out small hosts (or just accept that it may die much sooner than a white emitter and have some spares on hand for replacement). It’s no different than any other light, though, pick host size (i.e. reflector width/depth) based on proportion to emitter die size to get in the range of throw/flood that you want. Large emitter like this in small reflectors will get pretty wall-of-light floody usually.
Note that these appear to be much more sensitive to reflow ramp temps and max times at peak temps (a little like UV that way) so installation needs to be deliberate, whereas we can get away with more heat abuse with most white emitters.
Thank you for the detailed answer! I’d guess the K1 is probably the only Hankslight that comes close to being a large enough host to properly deal with an sbt 90.2’s heat. I know people have modded them into smaller hosts but I don’t need something jeans-pocket sized, particularly, so a K1 would probably work for me. I’ll ask Hank next month about it, and thank you again!
Thanks for this. The k30gt doesn’t interest me but a red k75 might be incredible!
Nice! If I were going to do a can-sized light I would definitely want to go with something with anduril for the candle, but I bet that color is wild in person.
I measured 850m range with the Convoy L21B with Osram CSLNM1 Red. You do have to buy the white 3030 gasket Convoy sell, 2pcs and sand down one to 0.6mm and glue both together. Without doing this the range drops to just 650m
